an arresting cover of an arresting song. this version of “green grass”, from brazillian singer cibelle’s 2006 record “the shine of dried electric leaves”, is both sublime and stunning. the tinge of bossa used in the song’s spare instrumentation creates a color and atmosphere that evokes an at some times diffuse and at others blended notion/dynamic of romantic idea and stark isolation. cibelle’s breathy float-on-top-of-the-mix vocal feels as an intermediary between that polarity. cibelle’s voice through tom waits’ penetrating words evoke those spaces between moments, the spaces devoid of the capacity even potential to feel something….anything.
jazz outfit soulive enlist the pipes of portland, maine soul singer nigel hall on this cover of the andre 3000 tune. “prototype” (the song) is well enough that it would be a good look on more or less any competent singer in the genre. but nigel hall’s delivery of dre’s really just flat out gorgeous melody lines really got our attention. props to soulive for seeking out this collaboration.
wow, this absolutely kills. funk journeyman lee fields’s cover of the supremes classic “my world is empty without you” is one the best songs we’ve heard this year. holy shit at the arrangement of this song, the cool backing vocal tones, the simple clean guitar strums, the subtle use of organ, and wow lee fields lead vocal delivery, equal parts bobby womack’s throaty swagger and otis redding’s emotive tailing off the downbeat. lee fields’ “my world” LP is out now on truth & soul records. check it out, the entire record is awesome.
Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson Breakup. not that it’s true, because they were never together. it’s just the title of their duet album due September. damn it. feeling like a tmz gossip whores right now - so while we’re at it… how about this picture?
anyways, the duo’s first single “Relator” is a solid pop tune with a classy old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll swing to it. Pete Yorn pens yet another gem, and Scarlett’s sultry almost raspy alto adds the right tone. blahblah yeah she’s an actress who’s doing the music thing… but fuck it’s better than hearing Feist do another damn duet.
our vote, she sticks with lucky bastard pete, and stays away from tom waits and jeff buckley covers.. Ghost World = pizza party.
