THROWBACK: Sam Cooke – Cupid
By Chris Gedos
Happy Valentine’s Day!? One of the smoothest ever drops one of his smoothest vocals, doing justice to this most corporate holiday. Marvin Gaye needed a much longer and more varied career to top this original top dawg. “Cupid”, which was also written by Mr. Cooke, peaked at #17 in August, 1961. Why wasn’t it a Valentine’s Day song!? Such an omission would be impermissible in the contemporary music industry. Quite possibly it could’ve given Sam his only #1; he made it to #2 with “Chain Gang” in October, 1960.
