Maths Time Joy – Missing (Everything But the Girl)

'Missing' by Everything But The Girl

So here at b3sci we’re pretty big fans of EBTG, Walking Wounded & Temperamental are classics. The massive worldwide hit a/k/a the song that most 90’s bros know them by “Missing” occupies an odd place in the Everything But the Girl canon, as while the original was a more subdued track much in the duo’s subtle but at that time rapidly evolving toward dance style; the version that was a US #2 was a remix. So while melodically great, the version that remains seared in the consciousness of anyone who was conscious in the late 90’s is definitely a bit of a pastiche of its era. “Missing”s great melodic lines, though, get a superb rescue and a 2013 modernization from favorite of the blog Maths Time Joy and singer Kimberly Anne. We like it a lot.

Interview with The 1975 in Los Angeles 7/24/13 [Audio]

1975photo_TroubadourLA

The 1975 made their Los Angeles debut known last Wednesday night at the world famous Troubadour in West Hollywood. The band were dialed-in that night and performed an inspiring, airtight, confident set; consisting of tracks from the ’75s four EPs (all released within the past year) as well as new material from their forthcoming Mike Crossey co-produced self-titled debut album (due in September via Vagrant/Interscope). Highlights from the night included “Head.Cars.Bending”, “The City”, “Sex” and set closer “You” as well as new album cuts like “Girls” which singer Matt Healy describes as (like much of the album) ‘made to sound like an 80s movie’.

Unbeknownst to the ’75 (or not), the guys are making moments. Whether winning over the likes of Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones, or turning heads at Glastonbury, The 1975 are poised and ready to take over the world; and they are doing so on their terms first. Prior to the band’s sold-out Troubadour set, we talked with Mr. Healy; discussing everything from the band’s history and philosophy, to their current state of mind and, finally, what fans can expect from their new album. Listen to the interview below and have a look at The 1975’s new video for their forthcoming single “Sex”.

Society – 14 Hours

society

Society are (and we mean this in a totally complimentary way) in the tradition of many great UK bands (anywhere on a spectrum between The Verve on one side to Portishead on the other) that follow a basic formula of a rhythm section rooted in soul & R&B + elements borrowed from the production of hip hop & rap + vibed-out love lorn vocal lines. “14 Hours” marries a dusty 60’s soul backbeat w/ a perfectly pitched female-sung gospel/R&B sample and singer Jamie Girdler’s gritty deep in the mix vocal. “14 Hours” is out September 9th on Angular Recordings.

Photos and Words by Russ Ramos

I remember when I first heard, “I need a Doctor” from Dr. Dre and Eminem. That’s when Skylar Grey’s voice immediately caught my attention. With a handful of releases and hit collaborations to her name, Skylar Grey took to The Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles this past Thursday (7/25) to celebrate the release of her new and latest album, Don’t Look Down.

Skylar opened with her track “Back From The Dead” and, along with her full band, she set the perfect high-energy tone for the rest of the evening. With a long but paced set list, Skylar took the audience on a ride of musical hits from the brilliantly written, “Love the Way You Lie”, to her radio smash, “C’mon Let Me Ride”. Throughout the set, Skylar would sit on her custom ‘construction orange’ stage piano, and sing to L.A. fans as if they were her family. It was pure and honest. Have a look at some photo highlights from the show below.
