RAVE’S FAVES: Dum Dum Girls – Bedroom Eyes

dumdumgirls

Here’s the second track to surface from the Dum Dum Girls’ Only In Dreams, and so far so good. Producer Richard Gottehrer worked with people like Blondie and The Go-Gos, and this track will take you back to some of the finer 80’s tunes. After a promising EP earlier this year, this album drops September 26. It was produced by Richard and Sune Rose Wagner of The Raveonettes.

RAVE’S FAVE: Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks – Senator

stephenmallkmus

Regardless of beliefs, over 80% of the US agrees that the political climate in Washington blows. Stephen Malkmus and his Jicks are back with a new album. Check out his take on our politicians. The song includes the line “what the Senator wants is a blowjob”, and that’s just part of his message. Contributed by Bruce Rave

RAVE’S FAVE: Mariachi El Bronx – 48 Roses

lp-mariachi-el-bronx

Mariachi El Bronx is a side project of the LA punk buzz band The Bronx. This is the song that they nailed on Jay Leno last Thursday night. It’s a long way from punk but you can feel some of that same energy. Listen to it and/or watch it below. Contributed by Bruce Rave

RAVE’S FAVES: The Horrors – I Can See Through You

the-horrors

The Horrors’ “Skying” album just debuted at a lofty #5 on the UK album charts. It drops in the US on August 9. It feels like their “Still Life” single (posted on B3Sci long ago) has a chance to blow up pretty well for these guys. The album has been streaming on various sites, and the uptempo “I Can See Through You” nails it for me. Contributed by Bruce Rave

RAVE’S FAVES: The Kooks – Junk of the Heart (Happy)

thekooks

People are hot for this next Kooks album, and I’m really liking the first official single “Junk of the Heart”. It’s pure pop with a huge hook. Singer Luke Pritchard says “I Wanna Make You Happy”, and this tune will do exactly that for pop fans. Contributed by Bruce Rave

RAVE’S FAVES: Trent Reznor with Karen O – The Immigrant Song

girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo-2011-movie-posters-1

This is in the trailer for the film “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”. What a cool idea for them to cover this Zeppelin song, and what makes it even better is that it sounds just how you’d expect it to. Enjoy, and at 1:39 you just might have the time to put it on twice. Contributed by Bruce Rave

RAVE’S FAVES: Battles – My Machines (Feat. Gary Numan)

battles_glossdrop

The band Battles just released their anticipated second album, and it turned out their name took on a deeper meaning when their lead singer and founder left the band during the recording process. The remaining members left the vocal parts open and then recruited guest singers. Icon Gary Numan was down for it, and thus “My Machines” was born. It’s got that crazy energy and imaginative playing that the band is known for. Contributed by Bruce Rave

RAVE’S FAVES: The Postelles – 123 Stop

postelles1

One of my favorite things to to discover a great new band when I’m at a venue to see someone else. That’s how I found The Postelles last year. About all I knew at that point was that they were discovered and produced by Albert Hammond, Jr. of The Strokes. I figured I’d stay for a song or two, and wound up wishing their entire set was longer. They have a definite melodic consistency. The Strokes themselves will probably never return to their early freshness, but what we get from these New Yorkers is much of that same vibe, only somewhat more pop.

RAVE’S FAVES: Florence + The Machine – Not Fade Away

florence-and-the-machine-005

It’s back to the “Rave On” album of Buddy Holly covers, due to drop June 28. It’s hard to go wrong with a Holly song, but Florence + the Machine outdid themselves on “Not Fade Away”. Gotta love the arrangement, which includes a wandering tuba. Florence is hot off of a reportedly huge Bonnaroo reaction, and I’ve got to believe that Buddy would be proud. Contributed by Bruce Rave

RAVE’S FAVES: Ida Maria – I Eat Boys Like You for Breakfast

ida-maria

The song title alone almost qualifies this track as “Rave’s Fave” but the fact is that I like this one about as much as past-fave “Bad Karma”. Ida, of course, graced us with “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked” a few years ago. I love a girl that’s sassy and funny, and who blows it up onstage. This Norwegian will be gracing California with live shows later this month, so check her intense live show if you happen to be in SF or Southern Cali. Contributed by Bruce Rave

RAVES FAVE’S: My Morning Jacket – True Love Ways (Buddy Holly Cover)

buddy-holly-rave-on

We have a complete rhyme this week because it’s “Rave’s Faves”. I heard this My Morning Jacket cover of Buddy Holly’s “True Love Ways”, and it simply can’t wait—this version is that pretty. The MMJ dudes’ new album will probably do real well. This song just might become a hit for them if radio gives it a shot. It’s not on their Circuital, but it is on the upcoming Rave On album of Holly covers. Have a good weekend, and keep ravin’ on. Contributed by Bruce Rave

RAVES FAVE’S: Kaiser Chiefs – Little Shocks

kaiserchiefs

When the Kaiser Chiefs released their first album with I Predict A Riot, it was one of the freshest, most spontaneous discs of its time. They become more formula, and it worked temporarily with huge UK hits like “Ruby”. Enter producer Mark Ronson, who recently rejuvenated Duran Duran. Call their new single a little shock. It features a cool groove that even contains a slight hint of hip-hop. The freshness and spontaneousness just might be back. Contributed by Bruce Rave
