Jesse Futerman – A Tribute to Horace

horacesilverblowinthebluesaway

Jesse Futerman drops off this nice vibed-out bit of jazz-influenced beats excerpted here from his “Super Basement” EP. We’re guessing the Horace in question is the legendary pianist Horace Silver who recorded about two dozen LPs for Blue Note, most of which are must listens.

Millennial Territory Orchestra – Family Affair (Feat. Antony Hegarty) (Sly & The Family Stone)

familyaffair

If you know us, you know we’re massive stans for the genius Sly Stone. To cover a Sly Stone song is task only properly acquitted of by only the most soulful, powerful, emotive of artists. It’s a very high bar to reach for, indeed. Here, Millennial Territory Orchestra links up with Antony Hegarty (a soul brother you may have heard of) to tackle “Family Affair” and puts down maybe the best Family Stone cover (one of the best 70’s soul covers, period) that we’ve ever heard. It’s really that good. The pace is a slow walk, the sauntering swaying horns are perfect, and Mr. Hegarty is 100% on point vocally. Spin it below.

Flux Pavilion – Lift You Higher (Feat. Lisa Hart)

flux-pavillion

The Flux train rolls on with this new unreleased track for “Lift You Higher”. Debuted on Mistajam’s BBC Radio 1Xtra show within the last couple days, “LYH” sees Flux continuing to marshall his sound further from the dead and buried corpse of the dubstep sound and more toward the D&B section of his palette. There’s also some pop, electro, and house elements on “Lift You Higher” but the track is still 100% Flux which translates to 100% heat. So hit that play button ASAP. (DoML)

Tree & Shelf Nunny – This is Separation

By Chris Gedos

tree-this-separation

“This is Separation” succeeds on the same formula as Tree’s previous offering, “People” lo-fi ethos, big yet intimate refrains, and very deliberate arrangements with unexpected shifts not unlike symphonic movement transitions. Whether Tree & Shelf Nunny record alone or in collaboration, I’ll be very excited to see if the youthful San Fran artists plop any LPs in 2k12.

EMiL – Deadwood

By Trevor Meyer

emil

Here’s a stellar piece from new London-based artist, EMiL. This song has a killer chorus hook and a beautiful string arrangement throughout. It’s the kind of song that gives you that feeling like you’re on fire and every spot is your “sweet spot” on the basketball court. This track brings the heat all day. EMiL is set to officially release “Deadwood” on March 25. I am counting down the days.

James Blake – The Wilhelm Scream (Gina Turner Bootleg Edit)

Yeahhhhh. When I first came across this house remix of “The Wilhelm Scream” (b3sci’s #1 track of 2011), I admit to first pushing play just to listen to how bad it would be. And then I actually pushed play and was blown away. Do not miss this mix by NYC DJ Gina Turner.

REVIEW: Old Soul – Old Soul [LP]

Contributed by Trevor Meyer

old-soul

Still swimming in nostalgia from the return trip to California, I took a few listens to Old Soul’s self-titled 2011 release. The album features a nice collection of folk tunes and blends elements of soul and pastoral ambience. My favorite tracks are the waltzy, “People Are Talking” and the dynamic “Red & Gold,” a track that draws parallels to older Coldplay and A.A. Bondy. Also, “Caught A Train” is a well-knit piece woven together by a fusion of soul, acoustic, and alternative rock. This album has a lot to offer its listeners. I highly recommend checking these guys out.
