Paul Weller – Starlite (D-Pulse Remix)

weller

Our favorite well-dressed geezer Paul Weller has returned with new single “Starlite” on Island. Offered up with the new track is this smooth new mix by Russian electronic artist D-Pulse. Pulse dude styles “Starlite” with far-away deep-in-the-mix vocals, spare on-the-one piano jabs and layered angular rhythmic syncopations. p.s. Noel we wish we could pull off the “Paul Weller look” so effortlessly too.

Arctic Monkeys – Little Illusion Machine (Wirral Riddler) (Feat. Miles Kane & The Death Ramps)

arctics3

Former Brit PM Gordon Brown’s fav new band is back this time with their Sheffield mate Miles Kane on vocal duties. “Little Illusion” is nothing short of another successful reinvention for the Arctics. The band sounds re-re-re-energized, fresh, urgent, all that stuff. The stuff that makes good rock and roll records.

Fallulah – I Lay My Head (Shook Remix)

fallulah

When you see the words “Shook Remix” in the headline of any song/post/mp3 you know you’re working with some pretty mint shit and the Shook one’s mix here of Fallulah’s “Lay My Head” does not disappoint. The mix is familiar from 0:01 with a groove reminiscent of Cheryl Lynn’s classic “Got to Be Real” and instrumentation that would sound at home as much on a Roger and Zapp record as it would an Ellie Goulding one. Tip to our friends at The Music Ninja

Trailer Trash Tracys – Dies in 55

ttt

The owner of our #8 favourite track of 2009 is back with “Dies in 55”. The sound that made that “Candy Girl” record so great is present again on “55”, breathy vox, laissez faire vibin’, all that distilled through the 2011 musical prism (so you know there’s Toro y Moi refs, and punched in drum machine loops). TTT keep it relevant but also manage to keep it listenable.

Watch the Throne. So we got a Bey feature, a Frank Ocean feature, and Mr. Hudson howling on top a Cassius sample. This shit is pretty major. Hit those play buttons.

J. Cole – Bring ‘Em In

template-2panel revised [Converted]

Round 2 of J. Cole’s “Any Given Sunday” EP series yields “Bring ‘Em In”. A track as Cole World explains was “Made this in ATL during the “single hunt” phase. Even though it wasn’t a single and won’t make the album, I love this shit!”. Yeah, we love this shit too.

Bombay Bicycle Club – How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep

Bombay Bicycle Club

“How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep” is the lead track off Bombay Bicycle Club’s anticipated A Different Kind of Fix LP. As with “Shuffle”, there seems a progression in sound not only for the band but one that’s bridging popular music. The song’s early soundtrack visibility can serve as an indication that this song has some light to shine, as we can only hope for the rest of A Different Kind of Fix.

Beady Eye – Blue Moon

blue-moon-beady-eye

Laid back is how we like our Fridays. Take Beady Eye’s cover of “Blue Moon” for example. Liam’s croon is gentle as ever, with the band almost framed in a world that John Lennon could have had for “Free As A Bird”. Not to make the cliche but rather to point out how even Lennon must have been inspired by the standard ballad made famous by both of John and Liam’s (and everyone’s) mentor ‘The King’. Either way, this cover is mint.
