It seems that America’s youth is really starting to appreciate the true potential of a Sunday night. For example, whoever said that you must stay in early on a Sunday night to prepare for the dreaded Monday work day? As a packed Fonda Theater in Los Angeles this past Sunday night eagerly anticipated the electronic wonders of Holy Ghost! to take stage, not many seemed to mind any looming cases of ‘the Monday’s’ that would be theirs in only a few hours to come. Midnight Magic opened things that night quite nicely, the crowd was teeming and the band served a nice warm up to the synthpop dance party that was to follow.
Consisting of Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel, along with some friends to man the drums and machines behind them, Holy Ghost! provided a dance happy soundtrack to the Fonda’s vibrant atmosphere. The band sounded super tight throughout the evening, not skipping a single beat or cue. The crowd moved in rhythm, seemingly without a single person in the house resisting movement to the beat, and the band fed off that energy. Holy Ghost played fan favorites off of their self titled debut album and 2013 album Dynamics. The audience sang along most of the night, rolling through different fan faves like “Okay”, “Dumb Disco Ideas”, “Wait and See”, “It Must Be The Weather”, “It Gets Dark” and 2007 single “Hold On”. It was also bandmate Alex’s birthday… which made the night even a touch more special.

Champs are two British Brothers from the Isle of Wight: Michael and David Champion… thus the name Champs, which probably didn’t take long for them to come up with. Their first EP is now out in England with an American release likely early next year. In the meantime, we can enjoy “My Spirit is Broken”. It’s beautifully melancholy with a haunting melody, sweet harmonies, and a chorus that will stick to your bones. Review by Bruce Rave

Day Ravies is a new psychedelia soaked guitar band that’s conjured up a debut album of noteworthy material. Phonetically dyslexic bandname aside, the Australian foursome showcases a thing or two about the art of shoegaze rock and roll on their full-length release Tussle. Below you can have a stream at the album in all of it’s dreamy jangle-rock goodness, and if you like what you hear, be sure to pick up a copy via PopFrenzy.

Think about The Blues. Reminisce on The Blues for a minute. Now picture the most desolate far-off place you can imagine (and no not Saginaw, Michigan). Good. That’s the visual for Aussie newcomer D.D Dumbo and his very very deep track “Tropical Oceans”. D.D Dumbo’s self-titled debut EP is out November 12th on The Blue Rider label.

The second single from Kevin Morby’s upcoming debut Woodsist Records LP Harlem Nights is the soulful rainy day nostalgia pop of “Slow Train”. A (very) relaxing glide into a territory when underground pop-leaning music wasn’t afraid to have a little bit of soul to it (the use of organ and the track’s hushed drums are particularly nice). November 26th is the date you need to know for Kevin Morby’s Harlem Nights record.

Fresh voiced Nicole Millar debuts the hazy warm beauty of new slow tempo-er “Fall”. Excerpted from a forthcoming (as of yet untitled) EP, “Fall” amounts to a really lovely and engaging bit of beats-driven vocal pop. Particularly special for the Australian Ms. Millar are those more ethereal breathy notes that seem to effortless breathe out of her (and with the track).

Parquet Courts may be an unassuming band on stage that rarely breaks a smile, but their steady studio and live work is building a fan base that will likely be loyal to them for years. “The More It Works” is a fast, bluesy winner from their Tally All the Things you Broke EP. This band likes to stretch out a song when they play it on stage, and I’m keen to see what they do with “The More It Works”. By Bruce Rave
