PREMIERE! Barny Carter – Still Life [EP]

Barny Carter has been producing some of our favorite night records of the year with the ambient “Park” and his remix of Sleepwalkers’ “Rear Window”. The 22 year-old multi-instrumentalist out of Bristol, who is piano technician by day and musician by night, fuses home-made samples, cut-up beats and atmospheric synths for his own climate of sound. Having already earned notoriety from the likes of the BBC, the young Carter is making many lists as one to watch. His debut EP titled Still Life drops on August 28th via DryCry Records. Get an exclusive sneak peak at it below!

Supreme Cuts & Haleek Maul – M00N

M00N is the latest from Supreme Cuts & Haleek Maul’s upcoming collaborative mixtape Chrome Lips. A definite improvement over first single “Dummy”, “M00N”, which samples King Crimson’s “Moonchild” (King Crimson, still the shit), bangs, clangs & smangs boosted into stratospheric heights via some pretty fresh sounding SC atmospherics.

The Other Tribe – Skirts (Eat More Cake Remix)

The great “Skirts” by The Other Tribe gets re-focused through the lens of a “dance party on the space-shuttle” by London producer Eat More Cake. Big track.

Face+Heel – Wounded Melody

The gorgeous (and we stress gorgeous) “Wounded Melody” by new UK electronic act Face+Heel (in a very 2010’s turn, the duo met on Soundcloud) is one of the best tracks of the month and maybe the year. On “Wounded Melody”, a wall of just really beautiful sonics supports a rhythm track of really excellent kick/snare cut-ups, that and the vocal sampling which is 100% not of this world. Listen.

Submotion Orchestra – Blindspot (Maribou State Remix)

London duo Maribou State refashion Submotion Orchestra’s “Blindspot” track into a stunning multi-genre dinner & dessert spread. At times quiet, at times House, at times the most modern in UK bass music, the sheer mix & variety of sounds traversed across the track’s six minute duration is really extraordinary. Do not miss. Ryan Hemsworth – The Happy Mask Shop

Hems new “Last Words” EP is the shit. The EP features five new tracks and fresh new remixes from Shlohmo, Baauer & more. Our favourite track from the EP is the Earth-from-30,000-feet-above panoply of “The Happy Mask Shop”. Cop dat.

Kendra Morris – I’m Real (Feat. Godforbid) (Jennifer Lopez)

J. Lo’s Mary Jane Girls-sampling “I’m Real”remix crushed the summer of 2001 (no. 2’s in the air if you were there too.) sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks. As part of a recent covers series, Waxpoetics connects NYC singer Kendra Morris and That Handsome Devil frontman Godforbid to “I’m Real” casting them in the roles of J. Lo and Millennial hip hop hot hand Ja Rule (Murda). The result is a buttery A+ great rework of a great song.

MUST – Graceland

NEW UK band hit that b3sci rock and roll sweet spot with debut track “Graceland”. Although laced up with shoegaze-era guitar leads, the track’s bustling rhythms and melodic umph give “Graceland” an interesting punch and those juxtapositions make for a nice dynamic. Give these young blokes your attention below.

Metropolis – One 4 U

OK, b3sci Grown & Sexy Crew; we’ve got a new R&B jawn we think you’re really going like (we do!). Coming to us via Atlanta, vocal trio Metropolis dial up the spirit of classic soul (including numerous “Listen Baby”s) balanced with more modern nods to Hip Hop & R&B rhythms (that beat is bangin). The group’s lead single “One 4 U”, excerpted here from their upcoming Resurrection LP, is as smooth and silky as a summer Sunday afternoon and a sound that you should certainly get with.

RAVE’S FAVE: Two Door Cinema Club – The World Is Watching

Two Door Cinema Club’s sophomore album Beacon drops the first week of September. The sound on the new LP is a bit bigger, and the direction is slightly more pop than on the band’s debut. Complete with arena hooks and melodies, most of the full-length sounds like Two Door in full stride. What I’m liking about the pretty “The World Is Watching” is that it provides some of the album’s most uplifting moments. By Bruce Rave

RAVE’S FAVE: The Vaccines – Bad Mood

Come Of Age is a perfect title for The Vaccines forthcoming album. The band promised us a true evolution on the follow-up to their debut album that we truly loved. Long time B3SCI readers might remember that we were among the band’s original US supporters. When Mike from B3SCI and I caught them at The Satellite in LA during their first tour in America, prior to their UK album release, he turned to me and said they were really good, but wondered if they could nail the follow-up. They did by a longshot! ‘Coming of age’ can mean becoming boring, but not here. The Vaccines still sound like The Vaccines, but there is more variety this time. I’ve already posted their awesome “Teenage Icon” single, and there are many good choices on the album worthy of “fave” status. I’m going with “Bad Mood”, which is one of the harder tracks. It smokes, and features some of the hottest guitar we’ve heard from Freddie Cowan. B3SSCI will again be joining me when they play at the sold-out Troubadour here in LA next month. The band used to play short sets because they didn’t have enough songs. Now they can play originals for an hour and have all winners. By Bruce Rave
