RAVE’S FAVES! The Envy Corps – Ms. Hospital Corners

Contributed by Bruce Rave

the-envy-corps

If you are longing for some fresh Muse, this band by way of Iowa just might help you through the drought. The Envy Corp. definitely have that vibe with some Radiohead mixed in. They are a complex band with depth that requires some attention, and the groove will really begin to stick with you about halfway through the song. A couple of listens have worked for me. Think Muse with a groove on “Ms. Hospital Corners”.

Metric – Youth Without Youth

Contributed by Erin Shay

metric

Metric hits it loud with their newly released single from their up and coming album Synthetica, officially out in June. Youth Without Youth is rowdy, large and totally in charge. This kick ass song is a roaring expression of youthful angst with all the carefree sensibility of seventies sleaze. Huh?! You will have to take our word for it. Turn that hell raiser up and go wild!

YUCK – Chew

Contributed by Erin Shay

yuck-chew

UK-based foursome Yuck showcased their 2011 debut self-titled album and new single “Chew” during a relaxed late afternoon set at Coachella a few weeks back. The track comes from the band’s forthcoming (little known-about) release and is booming and outrageous. Definitely a good sign on the horizon for the endearing young band.

In general, Yuck are an extremely likable 90’s musical omelet with a drawn out psychedelic vibe and just the right amount of raucousness, distortion and understated enthusiasm to remind one of the Pumpkins, Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. These cats are definitely worth checking out for their flavored, playful lyrics, spaced out lulls and shrieking guitars. The group are also known for a compelling aesthetic and extremely groovy album art, compliments of vocalist Daniel Blumberg.

The Ruminaters – Timmy

ruminaters

Along with quite a few other things, The Ruminaters bring a little of that Strokes friendly swing back to garage rock with “Timmy”. The young four piece out of Sydney definitely know their way around some raucous. Grunge-tim-tim#TIMMMAYY

SIGNED VINYL GIVEAWAY! Rufus Wainwright – Out Of The Game [LP]

rufus-ootg-cover

Rufus Wainwright has just released his seventh studio LP Out of the Game. The album is a result of his recent collaboration with friend and producer Mark Ronson. It showcases a mature Wainwright with some of his most honest and intuitive song work to date, with songs being rooted in recent life experiences and personal relationships. The genre-blending album of 70s inspired songs was developed among the two collaborators over a period of six months, followed by an inspiring recording session that tracked 16 songs in just eight days. The album features live takes from musicians out of Ronson’s all-star rolodex as well as appearances by The Dap-Kings, Sean Lennon and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

B3SCI has an autographed vinyl copy of Out Of The Game for one of you lucky, mad-b3scientists out there. Just email us saying you’d like to be entered into our drawing for the album. That simple, and we will pick our winner at random this weekend. Good luck.

Sparrow and the Workshop – Father Look

Contributed by Nathan Hetherington

sparrow-and-the-workshop

“Father Look” is a delicately foreboding album track lifted from Sparrow and the Workshop’s 2011 release, Spitting Daggers. The video features the trio’s obliging parents in what appears to be the behavioural attributes of a mid life crisis. Given the lyrical content I say fair play, especially when set to this blend folk-rock topped with Jill O’Sullivan’s alluring and plangent vocals.
