Houtakker – Judy, Judy

chicago

“Judy, Judy” by Houttaker, a member of Infinite Best band Distractions, is beautiful. It’s the sort of soulful, reverb-drenched, cascading track that many bands and artists with much higher profiles don’t seem to do nearly as well. A major highlight (and there are many) of the tune comes at about 1:30 when a wall of deep-in-the-p.a. guitar leads come down into the track. That minute or so instrumental is maybe one of our favorite bits of music we’ve heard so far this year. It’s that cool. See what you think below.

The Jim Jones Revue – High Horse

elvis2

So sometimes when deciding what to feature on b3sci, we ask ourselves a pretty simple question: “Would the legendary James Brown actually be into this? Would he like this record? Would he “feel good” listening to it?” Well, JB would prob be into this track, no doubt, but I think a more appropriate music legend litmus test to use on The Jim Jones Revue’s “High Horse” is “Would Elvis be into this? Would Elvis want to give this tune a second spin, or would he rather go eat a peanut butter and bananers sandwich?” Hmmmm. So would Elvis likely be into “High Horse”? We are thinking….”Uh huh.”

LIVE SHOW REVIEWS: WU LYF w/ Crystal Antlers @ The Echo, L.A. July 26th, 2011

wu-lyf-echo2

I tried not listening to WU LYF before their show @ The Echo on Tues, 7/26. Resistance was futile. To quote Alice Walker’s The Color Purple: “we are the ones we have been waiting for.” WU LYF’s debut Go Tell Fire To The Mountain channels this ineffable feeling of a universal consciousness, an evolved spirituality for the disaffected youths of the early 2000’s. If you haven’t given WU LYF’s LP a spin by this point, do yourself a long overdue favor. Songs like “Heavy Pop” and “Concrete Gold” (both of which have been on the Superhighway for 18 months now) gain a greater meaning when heard within the album’s overarching concept: a prodigal son kills his father the king then is turned away when he attempts to assume the throne.

You get more bees with honey than with vinegar. WU LYF’s reticence to speak to the media has officially begun to overshadow their music. Their recent Radio 1 interview is quite hilarious, but I could see the casual listener turned off by their caustic demeanor and not give the tunes a proper spin. Transparency is the only answer to speculation. With a level of popularity comes great public expectation, which none of us can control, for such is the nature of human epistemology.

Crystal Antlers’ impassioned set tided fans as they streamed into the venue. Although they weren’t originally listed on the bill, a solid majority of attendees were inside by the third song from the Long Beach, CA natives. We initiated a spirited discussion RE: idea bands vs. song bands – it’s only fitting that an idea band like Crystal Antlers would open for fellow idea band WU LYF. Such distinctions, while often counter-intuitive, prove extremely helpful in this case. By this I mean WU LYF would never tour with The Vaccines or The Arctic Monkeys, for example, since they operate on opposite ends of the indie spectrum.

I was afraid that WU LYF might sound a little sloppy live, since they’ve only played about three dozen shows. I was quite surprised by their tightness and how true they stayed to the LP. This speaks volumes for their unique sound which, despite paying homage to SST, early Modest Mouse, The Pixies, Tom Waits etc., could never be classified as derivative.

I can’t say anything negative about their live performance. Absolutely phenomenal! Their music is imbued with this creative imperative i.e. they make music not because they want to but because they have to. Every measure is joyously cathartic. Those who know the lyrics sing along; everyone else stands transfixed, bobbing to the backbeat. If only they’d done a cover of “Flip Your Wig” or “Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine”, I would rate their performance a perfect 10, but maybe that’s asking too much. Let us hope that WU LYF tour more of America next time around, so they can share their talents with more disenfranchised youths, the listeners who need their music the most.

WU LYF could be the biggest band on the planet if they wanted, but they already are in the hearts of their most devoted followers. – Chris Gedos

Brandee Younger – So Alive

brandeeyounger

New York harpist Brandee Younger into our mix the other day when we spotted her track for “So Alive” on MOOVMNT. “So Alive” is a jazz-arranged track that features the highly skilled harp playing of Ms. Younger, the beautiful vocals of singer Niia (you may remember her from Wyclef’s “Sweetest Girl” track from a few years back) and a rhythm section of Derzon Douglas (bass) and E.J. Strickland (drums). Despite it being intensely rhythmic, the track plays airily, light. The vocals and harp float on top the mix and breathe out the stunning bossa/lounge-tinged tune.

SULK – Wishes

255975_160933773974583_125458280855466_379198_5811682_o

New UK band SULK offer up a strong debut with the track for “Wishes”. The tune, which sounds as if it could be an outtake from The Stone Roses s/t sessions (we mean that in the best possible way.), borrows heavily from the Madchester heyday of bands like The Roses, The Happy Mondays & Inspiral Carpets. SULK takes that classic sound and updates it with a more modern melodic and instrumental sensibility. See what you think below.

A Francophone female cooing a haunting tune on top a minor-keyed acoustic guitar. Yeah, like we can resist that shit.

AIVA – Pink Moon (Nick Drake)

aiva1

AIVA, an artist out of D.C., delivers to you this striking cover of Nick Drake’s classic tune “Pink Moon”. Her take shifts the pensive acoustive shuffle of the original to a spacier, more expansive place. (think Moon Safari or Simple Things). Try out the track below and let us know what you think.

THROWBACK SATURDAYS: Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band – I’m Glad

captainbeefhearthismagicband

What a genius! Has there ever been more of a musical chameleon than Don Van Vliet? Well, maybe his longtime frenemy, Frank Zappa, which almost could’ve been the Lennon/McCartney of weird. I’m Glad proves that 60’s psychedelic rock never forsook the innocence of the first half of the decade. Rich production juxtaposed with economic instrumentation allows Vliet’s emotionally naked vocal to shine. Every listen of I’m Glad feels like the first time. If anything, the first two Beefheart albums are underrated. Contributed by Christopher Gedos

Rubblebucket – Silly Fathers (RAC Remix)

rubblebucket-silly-fathers

RAC continue their worldbeating tour of nonstop jams with their latest mix. This time its “Silly Fathers” by Brooklyn band Rubblebucket. RAC re-style the tune with dancier textures that will make you feel like your inside a 2011 version of Paul Simon’s “Graceland” video, if 1986 Paul Simon was your really cool time travellin’ bud. He’s ours (one of the benefits of blogging for b3sci), so if you’re up for an introduction 1) check this track 2) tweet at us 3) ??? 4) _______

Alex Metric – End of the World (Feat. Charli XCX)

alex-metric

Best feature by a girl named Charli since Charli Baltimore! Alex Metric’s “End of the World” is equally dope beats and dope vocals. The moment that build in the prechorus resolves into the tune’s mega chorus, any pretenses you had about not breaking out your chair into some sort of spontaneous dance throwdown are likely disposed with. We are INTO IT.

People are hot for this next Kooks album, and I’m really liking the first official single “Junk of the Heart”. It’s pure pop with a huge hook. Singer Luke Pritchard says “I Wanna Make You Happy”, and this tune will do exactly that for pop fans. Contributed by Bruce Rave
