Moonface – Headed for the Door

moonfacespencerkrug

Spencer Krug a/k/a that guy that was in Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown has a new project forthcoming. Recording under his alias Moonface, Krug is joined on the record (Heartless Bravery) by Finnish krautrock band Siinai. “Headed for the Door”, a sweeping almost cinematic 7-minute plus track, plods about for its first 4 minutes or so but the payoff really comes in about 4:40 when a wall of cascading guitars crash into the track.

DJ Khaled – Take It To The Head (Feat. Chris Brown, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj & Lil’ Wayne)

rosskhaled

First off, fuck Chris Brown. Now that we’ve got that out of the way. Self-promotion guru DJ Khaled is back with another summer smash with “Take It To The Head”. The smooth heater, sort of in the style of “I’m On One” with a side of current trends in indie R&B, sounds on the first couple listens like a hip hop radio juggernaut. The usual Khaled cast of suspects headline with Rozay, Crazy Nicki & DEWeezy (seriously whoever was running that DEWeezy street team at SXSW deserves a raise cause that shit was EVERYWHERE) making it rain radio-friendly bar after radio-friendly bar. Get behind “Take It To The Head”.

Madonna – Girl Gone Wild (Avicii Remix)

mdna

OK. So Madonna is our girl and all but what we’ve heard so far out MDNA hasn’t really grabbed us. (Sorry M!). That said, this BRAND NEW mix that Avicii dropped into his ULTRA headlining set last night (which included an appearance from Madge herself) is fire. So where was this sort of sound in the first place? With Madonna, the resources are unlimited. Benassi, Solveig, etc there are some big names on MDNA‘s production roll call but it’s like why not go for more? Madonna’s been able to stay relevant as long as she has by being nimble and by embracing those sounds just underneath the reach of the mainstream and making them mainstream. It’s clear she wanted to make some sort of EDM spectacle with this record. So why pull back? In pop’s current incredibly dance-friendly climate, there’s no real necessity to cull the “club elements” out of a track for the sake of broader palpability. Avicii’s remix is a bit of glimpse at what could’ve been with MDNA. It’s great. Turn it up.

THROWBACK: James Carr – A Man Needs a Woman

jamescarr

The great Mr. Carr was one of the best to ever do it. “A Man Needs a Woman” is one of those special moments when the right song and the right voice intersect and that little minor-keyed “To carry on” bit that balances the chorus is just perfect.

Azealia Banks – Fuck Up the Fun (Prod. Diplo)

azealia-banks

United Airlines elite status flyer Diplo current run rolls on as he picks up a production credit on this new Azealia Banks track. Diplo’s rapid fire snares nicely frame up Ms. Banks quick-on-the-draw spitting. Try to keep this one out of your head.

Rita Ora – RIP (I’m Ready For Ya Remix) (Feat. Tinie Tempah & Drake)

ritaora2

So if you’ve had urban/pop radio on at any point in the last couple weeks you’ve likely heard new Roc Nation ingenue Rita Ora’s RIP track. If you’ve been on the Drake train for a little while, then you’ll likely recognize the hook from his “I’m Ready For Ya” song from a couple years ago. (Oh and that other hook, “can you hear my heart is beating” that’s Nneka’s – “Heartbeat” song from ’09, which maybe more famously was then remixed by Chase & Status). Through the magic of the internet, all of R.I.P.’s component parts have now been fused together into one cohesive (monster) mix. Seems like a bit of a trend has emerged in hip hop (again probably though the magic of the internet and just the broadening of the emerging music dialogue/dynamic/audience) in sampling relatively current hit indie tracks Drake’s Jamie xx/Gil Scott-Heron sampling “Take Care” immediately comes to mind. Spin it and let us know what you think.

Being There – 17

beingthere

Being There tick all the right boxes for UK band to watch. They’ve got a great lead single (17), they’ve got a sound (think hazy 90’s alternative chopped up with some more modern pop-focused influences) that while relevant to the current UK indie scene is still unique enough to set them a neccessary length apart from it, and they’ve got BUZZ (NME, BBC Radio, the UK blogosphere are all in support). Check out the “Boys Don’t Cry-y” lead track and vid for “17” below and let us know what you think.

Only Real – The Drivethrough (Feat. Childhood)

onlyreal

Yeah, so we scoured the internet, searched wide and far, etc and came up empty on information about the artists involved in this track. Obviously from the accent it sounds like Childhood is of some UK isles extraction and so we’re throwing a soft bet out there that Only Real is British too. (EDIT: We found his Soundcloud, our dude is from London.) Identity verification issues aside “The Drivethough” is a great UK pop/hip-hop track you need to be listening to. Listen.

Stalley – Hammers & Vogues (Feat. Currensy)

stalley

Last time Stalley and Spitta linked up was for the awesome “Address” which was one of our favorite tracks of 2010. The two MCs hook up again here on the smooth jazz-inflected “Hammers & Vogues” which will appear on Stalley’s upcoming debut LP Savage Journey to the American Dream. The soft rhodes, hushed hi-hats breed beat on “Hammers & Vogues” is the sort of thing $$$$ could rap over in his sleep (or high) (decide which of these two are true) & is the sort of beat that’s right square in Stalley’s wheelhouse too. “H&V”‘s not quite as good as “Address” but it still knocks pretty nicely.

Avicii – Last Dance

avicii2

It’s that “special time of the year” when the world’s indie EDM glitterati descend on Austin Miami for SXSW the Winter Music Conference. Avicii’s playing the Ultra main stage tomorrow night and he’s got a little (if not the only) something special to drop into his headlining mix, it’s a brand new tune and it’s called “Last Dance”. Get it girl.
