Cadence Weapon – Loft Party

By Jon Herriot

cadenceweapon

Another track from Canadian hip-hopper Cadence Weapon. He is one of the most talented Canadian rappers but he is yet to get the attention he deserves. This one comes a few weeks after dropping a Grimes-produced tune that got him some hype. Dig the beat, and the verses are tight. Even some political jibes thrown in there which I always like. I have a feeling that big things are coming from this guy, and he is just giving us a taste.

LE$ – Gold Chain (Prod. Cardo)

les

Cardo’s one of our favorite producers doing it right now. Here he works the boards on track “Gold Chain” for Houston rapper (and Slim Thug-affiliate) LE$, who dropped his sharp new mixtape Menace today. The vibed out heater “Gold Chain” is our pick from the set it. Get it below.

BLKKATHY – Dem Bones

blkkathy

“Dem Bones” knocks. BLKKATHY is definitely one for your radar, the band take what everyone loves about music from bands like The xx, and adds an extra touch of vulnerability and BASS (can’t forget that bumpin’ bass). Listen.

Boldy James – Oil Sheen (Grease Monkeys) (Feat. Fatboi Fre$h)

boldyjames

Boldy James’ The Consignment project (due Feb. 27) is an anticipated release around these parts. Boldy knocks another one down here with the horn-sampling lush-life “Oil Sheen”. Come and get it, girl.

AraabMUZIK – A Diamond Life

araabmuzik2

AraabMUZIK occupies a level right now few other producers can even can come close to. Just about everything this guy is dropping whether instrumental or production is a must listen. “A Diamond Life” is excerpted from AraabMUZIK’s recent Instrumental University mixtape release (which you should definitely get up on if you haven’t yet) serves as a retrospective on the producer’s career and growth thusfar.

BJ The Chicago Kid – The World Is A Ghetto (Feat. Kendrick Lamar)

bjthechicagokid

“His Pain” ruled. Here BJ and K.Dot cook up the next chapter in their (hopefully long) collaborative history. “The World Is A Ghetto” (word to George Benson) combines that super smooth super cool feel of a classic Benson track with a Marvin Gaye/Stevie Wonder-esque (Stevie is also sampled here) rhythm figure. Just the beat itself is dope as hell, add in BJ’s well felt croons and Kendrick’s top-of-his-game 16 and you have what can only be described as a really special track.

Tyga – I’m Gone (Feat. Big Sean)

tyga2

Tyga grabs Medium Sean for Take Care-styled vibed out track “I’m Gone”. The Drake comparisons are obvious here. Tyga’s not really hiding it at all. The Weeknd-aping in the drum track and vocal samples, the R&B-fashioned atmospherics, even Drizzy’s flow sounds bit a touch here. Now with that said, the track itself is still pretty solid. Like we’re still spinning it. We would still tip to it. Tip to this.

Tyga – King & Queens (Feat. Wale & Nas)

tyga

“Rack City” is a pretty ace track. At least it was the first 100 or so times we heard it. Now as the Rack jam reaches its point of total saturation, new joint “King & Queens” emerges. Probably the most anticipated track from T-Raw’s Careless World project; if for nothing else for the quality of features (not every radio rap mark gets a Nasty Nas 16 on his track). “King & Queens” is a more cooled out look from the Young Money MC that you’re gonna want to get more familiar with ASAP. Hit that play button.

Kendrick Lamar – Cartoon & Cereal (Feat. Gunplay)

kendricklamar2

K Dot yep. Kendrick Lamar lets loose new jawn “Cartoon & Cereal”. Seems as if even our dude can’t avoid the imperial splendor, sprawl and grasp of the Untouchable Maybach Empire, as K Dot links up with MMG’s Gunplay for the track. The subtle nods to spaced out 70’s funk & R&B in the instrumental may remind a bit of ATLiens era Outkast. Tippin’ a Diet Coke to this one.

Dunson – Count On It (Prod. Phatboiz)

dunson

This is really nice. MD native Dunson (a/k/a Kenton Dunson) delivers on “Count On It”, the first single from the MC’s upcoming The Investment mixtape. Produced by Phatboiz (John Legend, Ludacris), “Count On It” has that nice Friday afternoon, just-got-paid, no. 2’s-in-the-air, feel good sound to it. (The track samples Sesame Street ffs.) Put this one in your rotation.
