B3SCI Presents: Jungle w/ James Supercave @ The Echo in LA on Monday, March 17, 2014

Jungle for Echo

London newcomers Jungle are one of emerging music’s most exciting stories right now. After a buzz ridden last half of 2013, and only a small handfull of tracks having been released by Chess Club and B3SCI Records (that’s us), Jungle are poised to make a major splash in 2014 with their forthcoming debut full length via venomous indie champions XL Records.

The band will surely be riding high from their busy week in Austin, TX for SXSW… and so, we are thrilled to have the chance to team up with The Echo to present Jungle’s Los Angeles live performance debut along with support from this month’s artist in residence (the also very awesome) James Supercave. Advance tickets for the show are sold out, but rumor has it that there will be a select amount still available at the door for early birds trying to get a glimpse. More details for the show are available at the link below.

Giveaway: Win Meg Myers’ New ‘Make A Shadow’ EP

Meg Myers by Russ Ramos Bootleg 2014

Photos and Review by Russ Ramos.

Two years ago, one of my friends told me about Meg Myers. As I watched her video for “Monster”, I was instantly captivated. Flash forward to just recently when Myers held the release party for her new “Make a Shadow” EP at the Bootleg Bar in Los Angeles. Here’s a few photos I snapped during the show where she’d performed songs from the release and a few other new songs (presumably from a forthcoming full length). The closing EP track, “The Morning After” was played completely acoustic, it was a beautiful desolate lullaby with a particular melody.

It’s safe to say that the entire ‘Make A Shadow’ EP is impeccable. In fact, I’m so stoked to share this EP with you that B3SCI is giving away a copy of the release to one lucky reader! To win just email us here and let us know you’d like to be entered in the Meg Myers Make A Shadow EP drawing. Our winner will be picked at random from the pool of submissions by March 21, so keep an eye on your inbox (one entry per person). Good luck!

Review: Red Bull Sound Select Presents – FIDLAR, Cheathas & Cherry Glazerr @ Echoplex in Los Angeles 2/27/2014

FAN Echo plex

Another record breaker was in store for the Red Bull Sound Select series this past Thursday, and this time it was at the much more ‘space’ accommodating Echoplex. Rumor had it, kids were lined up along Glendale Blvd. before 10AM to get in. The at capacity crowd didn’t much care that it was pouring rain when we left the venue after FIDLAR’s set. Actually, most people welcomed it. What occurred inside the venue was sticky hot madness, and could potentially have been illegal at times.

First up was Cherry Glazerr. The local three piece “dreamy garage rock” outfit put on a clinic of new wave of Silver-Lake garage rock. The Burger Records backed band, with recent release ‘Haxel Princess’ are on the rise. With lows and highs of the set, the crowd seemed to find a reason to get amped, and rushed moments came as energy spewed from the speakers to the dance floor.

Next was the London 4 piece Cheatahs. Although a majority of the club was packed, near stage there maintained some breathing room. People were really digging the Witchita Records band, but weren’t as enthusiastic for their new self-titled record, just released. Solid set, but the majority of people were there for what was to come next..

What can I say about FIDLAR? Either you have seen them or you haven’t but no doubt have heard about their live set. They shredded through their 2013 debut self-titled off Indie faves Mom + Pop Records. What sets FIDLAR apart from a lot of acts is just how amazingly tight and controlled their set is, while administering chaos. They did play a couple of new songs, one being called “Bad Medicine”. All of the new stuff is in line with their last album, but with a bit more refined sound. The pit was massive, the crowd was rowdy and the air was stagnant with sweat and angst, all of which created for a great rainy Thursday night of live music.

Review: The Strypes @ the Troubadour in Los Angeles on 1/28/14

TheStrypes troubadour

If you fancy seeing a new band that aces a modern version of early Stones meets The Yardbirds meets soul, you can put this in the bank: You will love The Strypes live. These Irish kids are in their mid-teens, they’ve played hundreds of shows around the UK and Europe, and their “Snapshot” album went top ten in England. The time has finally come for them to invade America. The Strypes will surely have a high profile at SXSW, and they recently flew over for a handful of major market shows in addition to their winning US TV debut on Conan O’Brien.

The Troubadour in LA show was star-studded on January 28. Elton John, whose management company handles The Strypes, was perched in the VIP balcony. Members of Muse, Blondie, and many other bands were on hand to see this band getting some much deserved attention in the States. I’d seen The Strypes and interviewed them last May at The Great Escape in Brighton, England so I knew what I was in for. The young lads more than delivered, playing over an hour. Like their album, there were lots of cover songs and there was only one song that wasn’t blazingly fast. This band is letter tight and, if anything, they might have actually played a bit too fast. Chalk that up to LA adrenaline.

The Strypes even dressed smart with suits with open shirts and they really locked in to a perfect groove with about five songs remaining. They band especially hit their stride during a covers medley of “You Can’t Judge A Book By Its Cover” into “Si Si Rider”. Their “Blue Collar Jane” EP is out now with the album “Snapshot” dropping stateside in mid-march. Beyond their youthful intensity, this is a supremely talented band. See this band live! Review: Red Bull Sound Select Presents – Mac DeMarco w/ Puro Instinct & Avid Dancer @ Echo in Los Angeles 1/29/2014

Mac Demarco The Echo Red Bull by Erik Voake:Red Bull Content Pool

Madness – pure utter, beautiful madness has occurred in the hot bed of the music world. The Echo recently hosted a Red Bull backed “Sound Select” concert featuring Mac DeMarco, Puro Instinct and Avid Dancer this past Wednesday, and I was lucky enough to even get in (the line ended up past the local dinner Brite Spot — ‘record breaking’ according to Echo staff members).

Starting the evening to the anxious crowd was Jacob Summers, aka Avid Dancer. Fairly new on the LA scene, Avid Dancer has impressed us here at team B3SCI since his early performances at the Bootleg. His first single “Stop Playing With My Heart” was released via 7″ on Hit City U.S.A. and was the crowd winner, as the already very packed Echo was grooving to the pysch-pop sound. It was the perfect opening set for the madness about to occur. Side note – Overheard in the crowd was a female who would not stop professing how much singer Jacob Summers looked/sounded like Morrissey.

Puro Instinct hit the stage next and given that their sound seemed more geared for Mac DeMarco’s set, it sounded it bit off. The production was there, but the hazy vocals, downtempo pysch feel had the crowd finding other things to occupy their time before Mac.

Once Puro Instinct took down and Mac’s team started setting up, the crowd got a bit more intense, pushing forward. The Montreal-based, wizard of things weird knew the packed house, and all of those fans waiting outside, were there for a fun time, and DeMarco had the set list to provide nothing less. The uproarious crowd became enamoured by the energy Mac and his crew brought to the stage as their brand of indie-pysch rock took over. Highlights of the show were “Ode ToViceroy”, “Freaking Out The Neighborhood”, as well as an attention-starved fan who would not stop trying to stage-dive and the crowd continually stopping her from doing it, with the band even chiming in to commenting about it. Other highlights of the night were all the other crowd surfers in the tiny Echo space, security trying to contain people, Mac shredding through “Annie”, “Robson Girl”, “Rock & Roll Nightclub” and “Still Together”. Like how I started this article, this Wednesday night in late January was pure utter, beautiful madness.

Review: Parquet Courts Live @ The Fonda in Hollywood on 1/17/2014

Parquet Courts

Parquet Courts headlined at the Henry Fonda in Los Angeles on a Friday night last week. Worth noting, The Fonda (as it’s called) has three times the capacity of The Echo — the site of their last LA appearance in January, 2013. Parquet Courts’ buzz has certainly magnified in this last year and the venue upgrade suited them well, the group had no issues covering the larger room.

My personal taste often leans away from ‘jam’ bands, who can sometimes put me to sleep when they stray too far from course. Not the case with Parquet Courts, who really know the right way to stretch out a song. There’s not a whole lot of showbiz at their gigs. The guys basically stand up and play, which is something they do very well. For this set, the band featured a new drummer who played his third show with the band, and he nailed his beats. The crowd devoured Parquet Courts nicely and better-known songs such as “Borrowed Time” and “You’ve Got Me Wondering Now” brought some added energy and enthusiasm to the house. As the band alternated between fast and mid-tempo, there was a bit of a lull about two-thrids of the way in (where a cover song or change of pace might have helped), but the energy returned with a blistering version of “The More It Works”.

The most popular Parquet Courts song to date has to be “Stoned and Starving”. The band were wise enough to play it on David Letterman recently, even though it’s from their Light Up Gold album as opposed to newer Tally All The Things You Broke EP release. Crowd members started calling out for it as early as two songs into the set… yet they did not play the song at all! When Parquet Courts’ hour-long set concluded, it was assumed that an encore was in store, but instead the lights came on right away. The perplexed crowd quizzically looked at their neighbors. Most people hung around and it was a few minutes before the house music began to play, creating abandonment of any hope. Were there technical issues? It’s doubtful that the venue was shutting them down due to time limitations. It’s one thing to leave the audience wanting more, but you never want leave them disappointed. By Bruce Rave

Malaysian singer/songwriter Yuna made her way to Los Angeles during her recent North American tour on December 19th. There is no denying that this show at Bootleg Theater proved sold out for a reason. Yuna’s loyal fan base sang along with every song. A stable and strong voice, Yuna has come a long way to get to where she is. Climbing to the top of indie charts at a quick pace, her persona is still charming, still beautiful.
