Herdwhite – Dreamleaver

The layers of influence in “Dreamleaver” alone make the song worth a second listen. The sound is progressive to say the least. Manchester born, Berlin based artist, Herdwhite lists his influences as Röyksopp, Depeche Mode, Sigur Ros, Pink Floyd. It’s enough to make your eyes roll for most anyone – that is until you press play. This track is airtight.

Tesla Boy – Fantasy

Tesla Boy has an 80s type synthpop sound you could have easily heard in your favorite buzz bands from 2002 to 200? You know… that time in the oughts when the market for New Order t-shirts began its fashionable climb to the top. Ironically enough Tesla Boy comes to us by way of Russia. In “Fantasy” the band takes sample at some of those cliches, which today’s western contemporaries might neglect, and the result is crisp. It’s an insightful approach, with a necesary tact, to the always embraceable sound. For those not yet familiar, then take note to the addictive pop stylings of Tesla Boy.

Foxes – Warrior

If you read b3sci, you know we’ve been on the Foxes train since day one. Here, the UK-based singer-songwriter delivers what may be her most focused effort yet in new single “Warrior”. Look out for that begging-for-a-UK Top 10-chorus.

Saint Motel – 1997

“1997” is the latest track to see release from Saint Motel’s forthcoming Voyeur LP expected on July 10th. The LA based four-piece showcase bright personality throughout their album of aptly crafted indie, power pop tinged rock songs, a concept emphasized in the whimsically nostalgic atmosphere of “1997”. Voyeur also displays lush and textured elements of big band (some contributions via the horn section of Fitz & the Tantrums), tropical, and even Latin musical influence. It’s a great record, mark it on your list.

Alexandra Burke – Let It Go

Picked this sharp little tune up while on holiday in Ireland last week (we back!). For our fellow Americans, Alexandra Burke won the UK X Factor back in ’08 and was a judge on the show last year. The neat dance pop (we are surely suckers for it) of “Let It Go” is the second single from Burke’s upcoming “Heartbreak On Hold” LP due in June. This sound is played out to the Nth right now; but “Let It Go” has a great melodic quality and energy to it that definitely will warrant your attention.

Harlan – Native Son [EP]

Contributed by Chris Gedos

harlan-native-sun

Harlan’s Native Son EP is a delightful pop carousel, one of my fav EPs as of late, with heady hooks to be enjoyed by music lovers of all ages. Per the Echo: “It has been described as Prince meets Genesis meets Shuggie Otis.” However, songs like “I Never” also show off a Nilsson Schmillson variety involving the rare juxtaposing of whimsicality and self-seriousness. Sprinklings of da Doobie Bros and Jamiroquai can be detected as well. We’re mightily stoked here @ B3SCI for his May residency at the Echo, one of the more exciting in recent memory. Harlan can hit all the notes and plays just about every instrument as well. And right when you think you’ve heard it all, there’s that desert rock guitar on the EP’s title track. Absolutely righteous!
