London-based brothers Ben and Louis Helliker-Hales aka Chaos in the CBD stream late-night house stunner “Midnight in Peckham”. Framed around far-off jazzy horns, subtle twilight electronics and a vibrant house-derived beat, “Midnight in Peckham” is an absolute standout not to be missed. “Midnight in Peckham” is out now on Rhythm Section International.

We’re into “Something Else”, the inventive new bit of rhythmic pop from South London duo Lightboxes. “Something Else” with its layered rhythms, instrumentally spare aesthetic and pinpoint alto vocal remind us (in a very good way) of Little Dragon’s best. The duo compose a unique live performance dynamic, singer Donna Thompson doubles as Lightboxes drummer and her songwriting partner John Atterbury plays upright double bass. Pop upstart Ofelia K. who’s made a bit of splash online with first two single “As A Bell” and “White T-Shirt” is party to a well-executed new mix for the later track by Kings of Hypem Golden Coast. G.C. add into the track a bit understated bounce and neat chord voicings to create for a dynamic listen.

Vic Mensa has been gifting us with new music every Friday for the past few weeks and latest installment “All That Shines” is another A+. “All That Shines” is in that joint rap-sung style in which that Vic always excels. Nobody really knows a lot about the hip-hop group out of Chicago, Goodbye Tomorrow. They first came on the scene earlier this year with “Jay Z” and followed up with their album A Journey Through The Mind Of A Non Believer which came out about a week ago. There is not one singular stand out track because the whole project is quality; but don’t take my word for it, listen for yourself. Reviewed by Jake Goldstein

Here’s one of the most buzzed-about late night TV gigs of the year. First of all, this is a song that caught my ear on its own merits. “S.O.B.” Is a raucous, retro feeling tune that will make you want to nod your head if not shake your entire body. Their first network TV appearance was August 6 on Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show”. When Fallon said “a party’s gonna break out right now”, he wasn’t kidding. As the song began with the stocky Rateliff in full beard and looking pretty serious, there was little indication of the mayhem that was about to ensue. He seemed like he’d be more at home on a football field than on a dance floor. When all hell broke loose, we got to see why the show booked them. Rateliff goes into full motion and displays nifty dance steps. See this for yourself, and no wonder the song has been garnering airplay increases based on this buzz. Reviewed by Bruce Rave.

LA-native Gavin Turek (who was hand picked by Mayer Hawthorne to be a vocalist on his new B3-lauded joint project Tuxedo) teams up with longtime collaborator B3-blog frequent LA deep-house-guru TOKiMONSTA for a new brilliant track called “Surrender”; which we enjoy immensely for its superbly-balanced dance-centric bongo-induced instrumental temperament, sultry-precise r&b vocal style and beautiful human-interest unconditional-love-will-prevail infinite-artistic-creation message. For us the dynamic duo rate at a fresh 10 out of 10 on poppy compatibility with “Surrender” which has us keen to hear the lot of their new seven track soon-to-release (August 28th) mini-album called You’re Invited that is out via Young Art Records. We love the sweet-nurturing calm vibe and funked-up synth accents of Sydney producer MXXWLL (also known as Maxwell Bidstrup) on his slick and centered vox-enhanced new “Good Feeling” for Jodie Abacus which we especially dig for its very subtle watery-ambient undercurrent and cheery-warm brightly-exuberant sentiments.
