Caroline Smith – Magazine

halfabout-cover

No one can escape change, but few artists are met with unconditional open ears when their sound does; Caroline Smith is one of these few artists. Her transition from folk-pop to funk-pop, on “Magazine” from her forthcoming Half About Being A Woman album, shows how versatile she is musically. And while her music has always been hers, it shows how willing she is to take a risk in making the music she wants to make as she grows personally – though her charm hasn’t changed one bit. Rave’s Fave: Jane’s Addiction – Another Soulmate

janes addiction

Jane’s Addiction is a band I’ve respected more than I’ve loved. “Another Soulmate” just dropped in advance of their upcoming tour and I feel it’s their best track in years. If you’re a fan, you’ll be pleased. We’ve gotta give them kudos for having the fire they still have after all of this time.

Aaliyah – Rock The Boat (The Melker Project Unplugged Remix)

alliyah melker

The mighty Melker turns in an A+ vibed-down “unplugged” (Melker recorded the piano and also did the beatboxing on the mix) remix of Aaliyah’s modern classic cooler “Rock The Boat”. Love love love.

Cage The Elephant – Come A Little Closer

cage the elephant come a little closer

The compactly gritty “Come A Little Closer”, the lead single from their upcoming follow-up to their breakthrough 2011 Thank You, Happy Birthday LP, hits (in tone, instrumentation, style, etc) just right. The track’s standout pitch-perfect production (from Jay Joyce) is particularly notable. We’re definitely into it.

FTSE – St. Tropez (ft. ForteBowie)

FTSE

In a completely out of nowhere collaboration UK producer FTSE links up with Atlanta-based producer/MC/singer of Trinidad James’ “Southside” fame for the beautifully melancholic “St. Tropez”. The midlands-based FTSE is on some kind of a run right now, turning in one must listen gem after another. With the release of today’s “St. Tropez” single, FTSE also announced a new EP today, the September 30th-due “FTSE II”.

Classroom Battles – Call To Arms

class room battles call to arms

Irish band Classroom Battles mix up an engagingly unique mix of sounds on single “Call To Arms”. The track’s main engine is a neat interplay between choral voices and a minimalist drum machine’d beats well complemented by singer Tigrane Minassian’s sort of equally far-off and wistful but emotive near vocal melody. “Call To Arms” is previewed here from Classroom Battles’ “This Week’s Question” EP which is slated for a September release.

Chela – Romanticise (Gold Fields Remix)

chela

Chela, whom you may remember for her feature on Goldroom’s “Fifteen” record, announces her debut single w/ the awesome Kitsune label with “Romanticise”. To help whet y’all’s appetites the Oz-based singer looks up fellow Aussies and favorites of B3 Gold Fields for a breezy, very continental synth-driven remix of “Romanticise”. Look for “Romanticise” September 2nd on Kitsune.

China Rats – Deadbeat

china rats

Liverpool’s China Rats turn up the punk for “Deadbeat”, the newest offering from their upcoming ‘Don’t Play with Fire‘ EP. Besides being an incredibly awesome suite of google-able words… china, rats, dead, beat (again we warn, proceed at your own risk), “Deadbeat” refreshes a stale amalgam of too oft try-hard indie rock trends with what else but the timeless blare of guitars and a quality tune.

deap-vally

Rock duo Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards a/k/a Deap Vally will soon gig through their hometown of Los Angeles in support of their new debut album Sistrionix. The way we like to put it, their sound traverses a familiar territory of high intensity vocals and riffs that at times sounds like “The Female White Stripes” and at others like all hell is breaking loose. These ladies have been making noise touring recently with the likes of Queens of the Stone Age and have also been catching ears at major festivals like Glastonbury and Lollapalooza to name a few. This homecoming gig at the world famous Troubadour next Tuesday, August 13th is not to be missed.

B3SCI will be giving away a pair of tickets to this coveted show to one lucky reader! To win just email us here and let us know you’d like to be entered in the Deap Vally ticket drawing. Our winner will be picked at random from the pool of submissions by Sunday 8/11, so keep an eye on your inbox (one entry per person).
