The Drums released Portamento last week and after a few spins through the record we got to admit it’s definitely a step up in terms of writing, arrangement quality, etc. “Maturation” or something like that. The well-harmonied “Days” is a favorite deeper track. Give it a spin below.

“Thorn Castles” is a fave track from one of our fave albums of the year thus far from Santa Barbara band Gardens & Villa’s s/t debut. The tune stops spits and starts, that syncopation framing a hooky melody that will have you thinking “CALIFORNIA” in no time, that or “GREAT SONG” or something like that, we don’t know, we have many talents but we’re not mind readers! Hit the track.

Here’s a little something new to bounce to from Paper Diamond. “Can We Go Up” is a nicely layered slice of electronic music that cuts across dubstep, edm, and maybe even a little moombahton. Into it.

We’re pretty big fans of Kathleen Edwards so when we learned a little bit ago that she had been in the studio working w/ Mr. Vernon we were positively geeking out. The beautiful “Wapusk”, the song named for a remote area of Northern Manitoba is a gorgeous bit of that goosebumps-up-and-down-your-arm sort of folk that Bon Iver and our girl Kathleen have built their careers on creating. Do not miss this one. (SVB)

BMRC join Daughtry? Coheed and Cambria? and Panic! at the Disco? on a video game soundtrack? Yeah we’re not so sure about all that but “Shadows on the Run” new from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and excerpted from the Batman: Arkham City video game soundtrack is a great tune. The heavy, slow boiling track is some of the band’s best material in the last few years and definitely one of our favorite video game soundtrack exclusives of ALL TIME!

B’more and BK connect again as Spank Rock and Santigold link up for another ace collab. This time its the infectious “Car Song”. Somewhere between N.A.S.A.’s “Gifted” (which Santigold also featured on) and indietronica 2011, the song walks a tension between Santi’s breezy hook and Spank’s rapid fire verses. See what you think below.

So you’ve prob heard Foster’s P.U.K. enough times this summer to make you P.U.K.E. but do give this new version of the smash hit reimagined by those kooky Kooks a spin. Cut today at BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge as part of their excellent covers series, The Kooks refashion the song a single guitar driven UK pop jam (not unlike their own sound lol). Hit that play button!

Coincidentally I drove through Cayucas not once but twice (Hurricane Irene flight delays!) in the last couple weeks before flying back east on Tuesday. Cayucas is a beautiful dusty little beach town on the PCH north of LA. “Cayucas”, the track by Santa Monica singer-songwriter Oregon Bike Trails is awesome on its own but gotta admit about 20 seconds in I was transported (a true test of the best kind of songs) back to last week and a place infinitely prettier, and sunnier (and less humid) than Boston. Get on the coast below. (R&G)
