Houtakker – Judy, Judy

chicago

“Judy, Judy” by Houttaker, a member of Infinite Best band Distractions, is beautiful. It’s the sort of soulful, reverb-drenched, cascading track that many bands and artists with much higher profiles don’t seem to do nearly as well. A major highlight (and there are many) of the tune comes at about 1:30 when a wall of deep-in-the-p.a. guitar leads come down into the track. That minute or so instrumental is maybe one of our favorite bits of music we’ve heard so far this year. It’s that cool. See what you think below.

The Jim Jones Revue – High Horse

elvis2

So sometimes when deciding what to feature on b3sci, we ask ourselves a pretty simple question: “Would the legendary James Brown actually be into this? Would he like this record? Would he “feel good” listening to it?” Well, JB would prob be into this track, no doubt, but I think a more appropriate music legend litmus test to use on The Jim Jones Revue’s “High Horse” is “Would Elvis be into this? Would Elvis want to give this tune a second spin, or would he rather go eat a peanut butter and bananers sandwich?” Hmmmm. So would Elvis likely be into “High Horse”? We are thinking….”Uh huh.”

Aloe Blacc – Billie Jean

aloe2

“Billie Jean” is one of MJ’s signature songs. There is no doubting that. But the iconic 1983 track may have found a new guardian on earth now that the King of Pop has passed. Aloe’s cover here of “Billie Jean” with a live string accompaniment is nothing short of stunning. Props to MADE for putting this performance together.

Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know (Feat. Kimbra)

gotye2

“Somebody That I Used to Know” by Australia’s Wally De Backer a/k/a Gotye is one of those just wall-to-wall great songs. From the construction, to the melodies, chrouses to verse; great harmonies, great lyrics, “Somebody That I Used To Know” executes amazingly well on all that and more. This is serious music. “Somebody” is not the sort of song you fuck with or take lightly. See what we mean below.

Mayer Hawthorne – When the Night Falls (Chromeo)

mayerhawthorne

Tourmates collide on this Mayer Hawthorne cover of Chromeo’s “When the Night Falls”. For the cover, Mr. Hawthorne enlists a beat that could double for Steely Dan’s “Do It Again” and laces it up with all the cool dad music trappings one could ever want. Ever wanted to feel hard on a fresh King Harvest or Looking Glass vibe? Look no further, friend and give Mayer’s “When the Night Falls” a spin.

SNEAKPEEK – Walk All Over Me

sneakpeek

SNEAKPEEK is a newish band out of L.A. city (they’re currently in process of recording their debut EP). “Walk All Over Me” is something fresh; a really engaging mix of big distorted guitars, shoegaze aesthetic, psychedelic/garage influences, and faraway female vocals. You’ve likely heard all these components whether by themselves or in some combination together before but you’ve likely never quite heard them melded together like this or pulled off quite so well. And “Walk All Over Me” is just a live demo! We are psyched for more.
