Track Reviews

Joyner Lucas – Mask Off (Remix)

Joyner Lucas is an up-and-coming artist out of Massachusetts whose smooth and lyrical flow murders this remix of Futures “Mask Off”. Joyner’s remix “Mask On” goes against the message of the original track in a direction that preaches healthy drug habits. It seems like Joyner’s concept for the remix was to contradict the original track. Joyner’s flow is very clear and articulate, and also condemns drugs like Molly and Percocets.

Nilufer Yanya – Sliding Doors

Out today from maybe our favorite new artist of the year thusfar, Nilufer Yanya, is the EP “Plant Feed”. Latest stream, the reverb-driven and soulful “Sliding Doors”, can be found as the third track on the EP out now on the also great Blue Flowers Music.

Masego – Navajo

Virginia artist Masego rings up a jazzy instrumental and a tranche of gloomy soul samples to set up a sparkling set off A+ melodic stylings (that “I swear that’s eye on me” run is especially nice) on new one “Navajo”. Into it.

Anna of the North – Lovers

NO-NZ duo Anna of the North announce debut LP with stream of title track “Lovers”. “Lovers” for all it’s vibe-y/trendy production nods is subtly and really supremely anthemic and catchy (that “show a little loving / shine a little light on” melodic bit is as good as just about anything else out right now). Lovers is out September 8 on Different Recordings.

Lorde – Green Light (Chromeo Remix)

After a three year hiatus, Lorde is officially back with a newer, more refined sound. Adding to that new sound is Chromeo who remixed Green Light, adding super-sized synths and a funky vibe to the pop track. The vet duo transformed the pop anthem into something more downtempo and smooth, and I’m vibing with it.

JMR – June Carter

Nashville artist JMR will release sophomore EP “Boyish” tomorrow (5/26). The magnetic and stirring “June Carter” is the EP’s second stream and we’re especially digging the track’s impeccable melodic writing.
