“Lotus Flowerbomb” is no doubt one of favorite beats of ’11 (esp. Miguel’s hook. Shouts to our dude Miguel.) That said, it’s great to hear it without Wale marblemouthing all over it. Raheem’s silky smoothy melodic lines elevate “LFB” from 106 & Park “bottom of the Top 10” status to grown and sexy bedrooms worldwide.

One of our favorite singles of 2011 thusfar, Dev’s “In the Dark” gets the remix treatment via T.O. mixman Barletta. The dark-of-the-club, sultry vibes of the original are traded in for an uptempo synthpop instrumental bed. Despite changing the fundamental feel of the song, the alterations made by Barletta on the track work quite well. Give it a spin below.

Long Arm’s stunning “The Branches” sounds bit like what Portishead’s Third might’ve sounded like had those geezers not totally shat the bed. Jerky, detached, heavy beats frame fuzzed out jazz and vocal samples. Rapper Teknical Development of UK hip hop group Obba Supa flows a few choice pensive bars into the mix.

UK singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran’s been on the b3sci radar for a minute now. He’s been blowing up as of late all over England; including frequent rotation on Radio 1. “Lately”, co-produced by Sheeran, is included as part of his “No. 5 Collaborations” EP, which finds the tunesmith on a more electro/beats-driven tip. So its been a big couple days for our man Raheem DeVaughn, first he releases this, then he’s a trending topic on this and……. on top of that, drops a pretty sick mixtape, Jackin 4 Beats. The tape has on it a mix of new songs (including four produced by Karma Music), and Raheem versions of (which basically translates to straight vocal murder) big tracks from 2010 (including Kanye’s “Power” Chris Brown’s “Deuces” and Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie”).
DeVaughn’s version of MBDTF’s “Runaway” is our choice track from Jackin 4 Beats. The timbre and tone of “Runaway” sits right in Raheem’s melodic sweet spot, with the D.C. singer running laps up and down the Kanye beat. Fellow D.C. native Phil Ade plays Pusha T, jumping on the latter third of the track and smoothing out some solid verses.
