Tuesday. It’s not quite as lame as Monday, but is more lame than Wednesday. The only thing that ever keeps Tuesday in the race for ‘best day of the week’ is new music releases. You’ll find gems all over the internet pop up, much like this one. LA based JUSWRHT dropped a new track online today and we approve. With sweeping chords, live violin layered on top and a catchy vocal sample, “Watching” is quite a debut. Reviewed by Brian Litwin

The Bulletproof Bomb can refer to the #7 car in the 1968 Hanna-Barbera cartoon Wacky Races. In which that car was driven by 7 little gangsters, all sitting in the front, sometimes shooting their Tommy Guns (thank you wikipedia). This is just one possible rationale for the naming behind this new punky 5 piece from Sutton. Having recently heard “Suitcase” on their soundcloud, I must say I am hooked. The surf-garage rock burner is infectious and a shit load of fun. The forthcoming b-side “Spaceman” is a nice follow up, with a breezy feel and is just as catchy. Reviewed by Brian Litwin

B3SCI may be crushing on Giraffage, but Giraffage is focusing all his crush on The Dream. More specifically The Dream’s 2007 album Love Hate. He had already remixed The Dreams’ “Shawty is Da Shit” to well received fan fare, so the next step (naturally) was to remix the entire album. The influence that The Dream has had on Giraffage is apparent in the way he approaches his own songwriting. A standout remix on this homage project is the album’s then second single “Falsetto”. The Giraffage touch is perfect for this track, a slow burner turned club chiller all while keeping that filthy guitar solo. Well done, sir. Reviewed By Brian Litwin

Madness – pure utter, beautiful madness has occurred in the hot bed of the music world. The Echo recently hosted a Red Bull backed “Sound Select” concert featuring Mac DeMarco, Puro Instinct and Avid Dancer this past Wednesday, and I was lucky enough to even get in (the line ended up past the local dinner Brite Spot — ‘record breaking’ according to Echo staff members).
Starting the evening to the anxious crowd was Jacob Summers, aka Avid Dancer. Fairly new on the LA scene, Avid Dancer has impressed us here at team B3SCI since his early performances at the Bootleg. His first single “Stop Playing With My Heart” was released via 7″ on Hit City U.S.A. and was the crowd winner, as the already very packed Echo was grooving to the pysch-pop sound. It was the perfect opening set for the madness about to occur. Side note – Overheard in the crowd was a female who would not stop professing how much singer Jacob Summers looked/sounded like Morrissey.
Puro Instinct hit the stage next and given that their sound seemed more geared for Mac DeMarco’s set, it sounded it bit off. The production was there, but the hazy vocals, downtempo pysch feel had the crowd finding other things to occupy their time before Mac.
Once Puro Instinct took down and Mac’s team started setting up, the crowd got a bit more intense, pushing forward. The Montreal-based, wizard of things weird knew the packed house, and all of those fans waiting outside, were there for a fun time, and DeMarco had the set list to provide nothing less. The uproarious crowd became enamoured by the energy Mac and his crew brought to the stage as their brand of indie-pysch rock took over. Highlights of the show were “Ode ToViceroy”, “Freaking Out The Neighborhood”, as well as an attention-starved fan who would not stop trying to stage-dive and the crowd continually stopping her from doing it, with the band even chiming in to commenting about it. Other highlights of the night were all the other crowd surfers in the tiny Echo space, security trying to contain people, Mac shredding through “Annie”, “Robson Girl”, “Rock & Roll Nightclub” and “Still Together”. Like how I started this article, this Wednesday night in late January was pure utter, beautiful madness.

I feel ya Chicago. Being born and raised in Chi-town and enduring the brutality of those snowstorms, sub-zero tempuratures and winds truly does suck at times. But cheer up to this new track from one of your own. Chicago’s Gilligan Moss creates a happy landscape full of life and warmth. 2013 was an incredible year for music, and 2014 is shaping up to be even better. Rising star John Newman has really hit the ground running in the new year. Having been a featured artist on 2 tracks in 2012 (Rudimental’s “Feel The Love” and “Not Giving In” with Alex Clare) and with the current radio hit “Love Me Again”, his recent live performance at the El Rey only added to the buzz surrounding the young John Newman.
To start the night off, Brooklyn based WE ARE TWIN hit the stage to an all white backdrop and eager crowd. Bringing their power pop sound to a music hungry crowd, they resonated well with the LA audience. Lead singer Gabi Christine, with her long braided hair and her school-girl-plaid skirt commanded the stage and navigated every inch of the space. Playing tracks off their self-titled major label EP release, the single “The Way We Touch” stood out as the star song from the set. The crowd vibed well to their shorter set and even Randy Jackson (music man, producer, former American Idol enthusiast and dance crew dude) was seen in the crowd digging the tunes.
John Newman next hit the stage with a big bang. A backing track played for a minute or so and then lights exploded on the stage as the giant white backdrop curtain fell to unveil a l6 piece band and John standing on a platform in the back, with his back to the crowd. Everyone on stage was in black and white suits and dancing in unison as Newman opened his set. The show was originally set to be played the Troubadour, but due to demand – was moved to the larger and more accommodating El Rey Theater. Still there was barely any room to stand, so it was a good thing this show got moved.
John rolled through his set with class, showmanship, he had absolute control of the audience, and had dance moves that came way out of left field. His voice has a distinct nasally, raspyness to it, and some overall stylings similar to Otis Redding, which the LA crowd ate up. When Newman got to the second single off his 2013 debut full length release Tribute, the crowd really started to get into it. “Cheating” got the crowd jumping and he rolled into the slower, piano driven “Easy”. Right after that the drummer marched in to the third single of the album “Losing Sleep”. With a wall of applause, John seemed taken aback and truly humbled with the response right before he went into “Down On Life” and “Gold Dust” to close the set. The crowd wanted more and John came back out with just a piano player and drummer for a slowed-down version of the widely popular “Not Giving In” by Rudimental. The crowd heard the hook and responded immediately. Finally as the last song had to be the current hit in the US and star off Tribute. John and crew blazed through a mesmerizing version of “Love Me Again”. There is no denying that this 23 year old Brit has incredible talent, but this live show is what really sets him apart from other indie darlings of the same vein.

Pairing two of the hottest acts of 2013 is always smart, especially when its Canadian Kaytranada remixing London duo Disclosure’s “January”. To put it into a formula Disclosure + Kaytranada = Internet Explosion. Taking the original laid-back, deep house track, Kaytranada offers a soulful spin that’s both funky and slick. London collective Breton has been busy readying their second album, War Room Stories, for release this February 3rd via Cut Tooth/Believe Recordings. B3SCI writer Brian Litwin had the chance to catch up with the Breton Labs’ Roman Rappak to discuss the new album and more. Have a look at their conversation below, as well as a spin at their new excellent single “Envy”.
B3SCI: The overall buzz for your last single, “Got Well Soon” has been very positive. What was the genesis of this song idea?
Breton: The song is a rework of a track that I started in London that was then re-written in Berlin.
B3SCI: The video for that song is really well done and honestly had us guessing up until the last second. Can you share some of the inspiration there?
Breton: As with most of our videos, they start from a real event or something we have heard and want to explore. In the case of this video, we wanted to add something we hadn’t touched on before, which was to relate to the songs lyrics. It’s about getting caught up with a group of people or an event that gets out of your control. The two characters in the film are both trapped, in totally different ways, and we liked the idea of a coincidence occurring that resulted in them freeing each other.
B3SCI: We see you released a slew of new tour dates for the end of 2013/beginning of 2014. Unfortunately, I see no Los Angeles yet. How is life on the road for you guys? How do you guys pass the time, when getting to and from dates?
Breton: We watch films, read a lot and a few of us have perfected the art of sleeping almost anywhere. We are definitely coming to LA, we have always had amazing shows there, and have really close friends who make those trips feel like total holidays
B3SCI: The new album, War Room Stories, comes out soon. Was their a particular process in creating this album? How does it most differ from your 2012 release, Other People’s Problems?
Breton: War Room Stories is a totally different record in some ways, mostly because we had tools we never had to play with. This time round we had a huge hall we rented in Berlin so that we could play the whole album from start to finish every day for a month, we had an orchestra that we were able to record all the string parts with, and also we had weeks to work with the hours and hours of field recordings and sounds we had gathered from all the countries we had toured in.
B3SCI: War Room Stories is a really interesting title for an album. The connotation can vary from person to person. What is the general idea behind the title and album itself?
Breton: I think the best thing about this question is the idea of interpretations of words/images/songs/films changing from person to person. I’m always drawn towards things that lend themselves to different meanings or angles, and the title of the album felt like a continuation of that. As a recording, it’s a bit like an invitation into this world we escaped to when we were recording it. A War Room is a sealed/protected place, and the stories from outside will always be distorted and surreal.
B3SCI: So, we see that Young Money Cash Money Billionaires is following you on Twitter. Are you fans?
Breton: I was producing hiphop when I was about 14, because south London, where I grew up, was full of millions of rappers (ranging from really bad to incredibly gifted), but hardly any producers, so I ended up working on loads of different projects. YMCMB and 808 Mafia have an amazing approach to producing, with massive teams of people collaborating together and trying loads of things out. I find that kind of collaboration really exciting.
B3SCI: There are a lot of acts pushing the boundaries with art and music. In general, however, it feels as if art has been missing from music. Do you think there can be resurgence of that fusion that was art/music/culture i.e. 60’s counterculture?
Breton: I think a lot of those art/music/media experiments came from breakthroughs in technology. Andy Warhol using Polaroid and super 8 because they were new tools that empowered new artists is the same as the Internet/DSLRs/laptops enabling people to produce albums and films, and reach large audiences. For that reason I think this is only the start, and the next 5 years will see more and more of these tools reinventing the landscape of film, art and music even more then it has already.
B3SCI: If you had to chose… Who would you rather have as a featured vocalist on your next single: Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber?
Breton: Bieber. He seems like someone who is about to reach his breaking point. Those kind of pop catastrophes are always fascinating.

Today he dropped “Call My Name”, an uber smooth R&B laced jam, something Chris seems no doubt comfortable with. It’s excellent. Round synths, percussion instruments, consistent 4X4 beat, sampled vocals and a very chill vibe. If/when we receive a full length from Chris, expect it to possibly reach mainstream levels. There’s a few things that we know about the new project from Jacob Summers a.k.a. Avid Dancer. Born in Tennessee, raised in Alaska and now based in LA, Avid Dancer has already hit the local music scene pretty strong. Having opened for the likes of Born Ruffians, Night Terrors of 1927 and supporting Wild Belle, Avid Dancer has impressed the hipster breeds from Silver Lake to Echo Park. Now offering a first recording to the public, “Stop Playing With My Heart” hits all the chords with its throwback pysch-pop sound and misty, L.A. feel. I’ve said it once and I will say it again – an Aussie remixing an Aussie is a winning formula. This time around it is a Future Classic party of Panama’s “Always” done up nicely from buzzing producer and labelmate, Wave Racer. The new single from the Sydney quintet has legs by itself and a nice remix from CLASSIXX, but this Wave Racer synth explosion is the icing on the cake. Scope it below. Reviewed By Brian Litwin
