REVIEW: Slothbear – Canter On (LP)

slothbear-canter-on

Loving lots to do with Slothbear’s new LP. Beginning with the fact that it’s a five song full length. Canter On is the perfect balance of post rock and popular music. Almost as polarizing for indie rock today as say something like Pet Sounds in the 60’s. And a personal preference, the band indulges with the perfect touch of naiveté hinting at so much left to say. The creativity is flowing and Canter’s second track and 10 minute long “Goodnight, Retrograde” serves a worthy indicator by many standards. Canter On explores ideas left by some iconic pioneers of pop, post rock, experimental, math, jazz.. and why stop there? I might as well have already burned through several copies of “Ex-teen” at some point in the last 20 years.

RAVE’S FAVES: Boots Electric – Complexity

bootselectric

Jesse Hughes from Eagles of Death Metal is back with Boots Electric, and they’ve got a nice buzz going for them here in LA. We need some fun, straight-forward, uptempo tracks to rock our 11.11.11’s, and this song does it perfectly. Contributed by Bruce Rave

poolsidepersonaltouch

Las Vegas-based production duo Personal Touch drop a new remix for Poolside’s “Do You Believe”?. The mix is an uptempo nu-disco number with enough nods to 70’s R&B to have even the most discerning soulbrother on the floor in no time.

Peter Bjorn & John – Dig a Little Deeper (Mayer Hawthorne Remix)

pbj

The dude Mayer Hawthorne takes PB&J all the way back 1970 on this new remix for “Dig a Little Deeper”. It’s a jangly, well-harmonized joint that would be right at home smack in the middle of an all-request triple play on your local Oldies station.

Small Black – Love’s Not Enough

smallblack

Aside from a fly set of eyebrows, b3sci favs Small Black have something else in common with Drakkard Noir. Both fuck with Nicki Minaj. Here the SB boys go legit on that Nicki R&B #1 adding the band’s signature harmonies and “other stuff” to create one cool ass jam. Look out for the “MOON KILLER” mixtape, due 11/11/11.

B3SCI PREMIERE: Y LUV – Earthquakes

yluvearthquakes

We are PSYCHED to present the WORLD PREMIERE of LA based collective Y LUV’s single for “Earthquakes”. It’s an ace indie pop track with great melodies AND great hooks for days. Frontman Freddy Janney had this to say about some of the inspiration for the track, “Sam and Evan were talking about earthquakes and the ‘big one’ on the way to a show once and I realized I had been living here for awhile and had never really thought about that possibility. It scared me. It made me realize how fragile life is. It got me thinking about what really matters. Also, while I was freaking out about an earthquake, my sister and her friends were looking at a magazine and freaking out (as much or more) about how amazing someones body was and how they would never look like that and never be as happy as that person . . . I guess it’s all relative. It’s a song that recognizes the world might fall but celebrates that it hasn’t.” Stream “Earthquakes” below and pick it up now at the band’s Bandcamp page.

Teedra Moses – Get Free

teedramoses

We’ve been big fans of Teedra Moses for a minute now. Recently, our girl signed with Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group. Here’s hoping that means she’ll be able to get hands on some of those syrupy Rawse mafioso beats. Teedra was born to sing over that shit (think Gwen McCrae). She’s one of the best voices in the R&B game, period. Cheers to the MMG signing being the start of a push to the top that is deserving of her talent.

Drake – The Ride (Feat. The Weeknd)

drake1

Hearing Drake and The Weeknd on a sort of 70’s soul influenced major key track like this is nuts. Take Care is sooooo fucking good; such a massive step forward from Thank Me Later. Hard to believe it’s the same guy. Take Care might be a classic. It’s, no doubt, one of the best LPs of 2011. “The Ride” might be our favorite track from it yet.

Childish Gambino – Letter Home

childishgambino

So “Bonfire” was pretty hype. “Heartbeat” goes in well enough. But what about the rest of Camp. The LP’s been streaming for a couple days now on NPR. We’ve listened through a few times and …..eh. Not saying Camp is a let down but we’re not sure the LP as a whole will really exceed expectations (which are, admittedly, very high). The R&B-y “Letter Home” is one of our favorites from Camp and features a singing D. Glover pining out to an estranged lover. Camp is due Nov. 15.
