Swimming Tapes released on Friday their debut “Souvenirs” EP on Hand in Hive. The dreamy final reveal from the EP is “Cameos”, a slightly beachside-flavored diversion in the ST sound built around a very strong (and quite catchy) main chorus hook (quite truthfully much of the track feels like one chorus after another chorus after another, it’s that anthemic!). “Souvenirs” is out now on Hand in Hive.
“Good Love” new from Leeds UK songwriter Dom Robinson is an exquisite bit of songwriting. Taking on a haunting, poignant character with it’s spare instrumentation and whirl of vocal multi-tracks, “Good Love” hits a number of quite moving moments on its way to a very impressive overall listen. We quite like the Bunnymen-inspired (maybe a bit of Foals too) Dan Carey-produced “Everything (Deathless)” from London-based Jack Ridley a/k/a JW Ridley. “Everything (Deathless)” operates on an engine of Cure “A Forest”-esque segmented rhythms set with dynamics-driving synth sweeps and the odd bit or bob of electronic noise. “Everything (Deathless)” is out via a limited 7″ on Speed Wunderground on February 10th.
Angeleno transplants (via Philadelphia) Mt. Joy turn in currents events-conscious (a bit of empathy set off into Trumpland) new one “Sheep”. Soulful in a sound palette way that suggests the track could’ve been released at any anytime in the last 40 years or so, that universality/timelessness adds a significant bit more punch/support to the track’s weightier lyrical content. We dig.
Fresh off the release of J. Cole’s 4th studio album, 4 your eyez only, Cole drops the mic on his latest released track “High for Hours”. The song is a slow jam which helps the listener really focus on what Cole has to say. Strategically released on Martin Luther King Day, Cole delves into his own mind about racism, religion, and politics. This is truly a deep track and a great way for J. Cole to start 2017.
William Bolton is at it again with another track that’s straight fire. “No” (prod. William Bolton // Mischief Boy) hit my heart hard with the soulful keys and electric guitar riffs. The tropical undertones gives this track a carefree vibe that bring you back to the summertime. “No” reminds me of chilling out poolside with my friends sipping beers. If you’re into that sort of a vibe, check it out.
The Internet’s Matt Martians announced debut solo LP The Drum Chord Theory with first stream “Diamond In Da Rough”. “Diamond In Da Rough”, the track, hits a early/mid 70’s funk stride cast about breezy proto-disco guitars. The Drum Chord Theory is out January 27th and features collaborations with Tyler the Creator, Syd, Kari Faux, Steve Lacy, and more.
