Nicolas Jaar pulls the floor/foundation/earth’s crust out from under the Shlohmo jam “Rained the Whole Time”. We’re talking SUPER deep. Jaar takes what was already a cooly visceral track and has (by mixing in subtle changes in rhythms and atmopsheres) cooked down “Rained the Whole Time” to its most bare, vulnerable & transparent. It’s a really powerful mix.

We’ve had Youan on heavy blast here at b3sci HQ the last couple weeks and continue to not really be able to get enough. Let “Movin'” be your introduction to this criminally under the radar artist.

Santigold today let loose the second previewed track from her upcoming sophomore album Master of My Make Believe. A definite upgrade from lead track “Big Mouth”, “Disparate Youth” sounds somewhere between an islands flavored remix of “Big Jet Plane” (seriously, it’s same progression/feel, guys) and (at least in the intro) of Young Money’s “Bedrock”. The melodies here are good, though, as are the neat bits of arrangement magic in the rhythm and instrumental tracks. Get a sample below.

From a minimal, simple beat this builds into a bumpin’ track. Granted, the original track was already huge so its hard to go wrong, but Alain Lalonde spins this in a fresh new way. Diggin’ it. Especially when it chills and quiets down at the end getting people ready for the next track. He inserts and alters the Nicki Minaj vocal bits in a nice way too. This guy is showing some promise out of my hometown of Regina, Canada.

Tyga grabs Medium Sean for Take Care-styled vibed out track “I’m Gone”. The Drake comparisons are obvious here. Tyga’s not really hiding it at all. The Weeknd-aping in the drum track and vocal samples, the R&B-fashioned atmospherics, even Drizzy’s flow sounds bit a touch here. Now with that said, the track itself is still pretty solid. Like we’re still spinning it. We would still tip to it. Tip to this.

Scottish R&B songstress Yasmin let loose today to her fans this sharp new Diplo-produced demo “Takes 1 2 Know 1”. The song is Co-written by 90’s R&B star and collaborator on Switch’s great “I Still Love You” track from last year the awesome Andrea Martin (!). Between that Usher “Climax” track and that massive “Express Yourself” heater Diplo’s kind of had something of a week and “Takes 1 2 Know 1” is an excellent bit of punctuation to it.

The Pacific breeze was negated by FIDLAR’s fiery set Thursday night for the Filter Issue 47 release party at Vita Hill Social Club in Santa Monica. For those exiled from the scene, FIDLAR (Fuck it dog life’s a risk, what a name!) is the next great LA band. Or so they’ve been hailed by many a tastemaker over the past six months. I was highly entertained but not entirely convinced of their staying power after watching them at The Smell on Jan 10th; however, I’m officially a convert after Thursday’s set.
FIDLAR know how to conjure a state of hysteria, with twenty zealots moshing violently in front, as though the mosh were invented yesterday. In other words, the band has been playing some of the rowdiest sets in recent rock memory. Photographers clutched onto their equipment for dear life. Someone flew into me and I spilled my screwdriver all over my sweater. FIDLAR plays with a raw energy which is terrifying but also joyous at the same time. To call them a crossover band is a disservice; they rise above the punk distinctions and the Blink-182 comparisons.
The DIYDUI EP has a phenomenal replay value, and the success of an LP depends largely on its production. I wouldn’t mind hearing someone like Ric Ocasek step in and guide through sixteen songs in thirty-four minutes. Especially when you hear new song “No Waves”, the pop potential is readymade. And few bands have more at stake than FIDLAR. Their trajectory will be more clearly defined after their eight! SXSW shows next month. Until then, FIDLAR will be getting fucked up, having a good time, and playing the fast, fun, abrasive music they want to play in the overarching Bill Haley tradition. Campfires released Slaughter Tropes back in December 2011. Needless to say we were all excited by the album. The guitar work in this little number “Melted Rubber Soul” has a way of sticking with you throughout the day. The production value is redolent of the vintage humbucker and chiming tones frequently used during the 60’s British Invasion. Mouthwatering. Give your ears a treat and spin this one.
