Throwback: Ken Boothe – Can’t You See

Ken-Boothe

It’s hard to resist a song that opens with lines like “can’t you see, she is lonely / leave her alone”. Sung ever so sweetly by Ken Boothe and originally released on the FAB label in 1968, “Can’t You See” is a killer gem of rocksteady splendor written by Mr. Rock Steady himself, a name and reputation that Boothe garnered from his days with Studio One. The short-lived genre of rocksteady – defined as something slower than ska and more ballad-oriented than reggae – may not get as much attention nowadays, but its influence is surprisingly far-reaching, across genres as well as generations. “Can’t You See” still sounds fresh to the ears for that very reason, in addition to being insanely catchy on its own. Review: The Sounds @ Belasco Theater in Los Angeles on Thursday 10/24/2013

The Sounds at Belasco LA Russ Ramos 6

Photos and Words by Russ Ramos

Swedish indie rock band The Sounds made their way to Los Angeles last night for a soldout show at the historic Belasco Theater, in the heart of Downtown. I go to a abundance of venues and shows, and shoot a plethora of bands, sometimes you’re not guaranteed a good show — The Sounds put on a great show. Lead singer Maja Ivarsson came out with a blazing cigarette, high heels, and a drop dead sexy dress, and like always, her attire had absolutely no effect on her performance. Paired up with bandmates Félix Rodríguez, Johan Bengtsson, Jesper Anderberg, and Fredrik Blond, The Sounds put on a real rock show that night. Lets just say you could hear them play from a couple of blocks away. It doesn’t look like The Sounds will be back in the States till later next year, if that. Dont miss your next chance to see them and be sure to check out their fifth studio album, Weekend due October 29.

Tigercub – Mother

miagi

In January this year Brighton trio Tigercub released their debut single “Little Rope”, a particularly satisfying alt guitar-pop piece with lashings of bite. Things have been grunged up somewhat with new track “Mother” and it couldn’t be better. The EP is out on Monday 28th October so in the meantime give this video a whirl and sink back into ’92. Oscar Key Sung – All I Could Do

Oscar Key Sung - All I Could Do

We are loving the wonderful R&B/house-blend of Australian Oscar Key Sung’s new “All I Could Do” single. The second track off his upcoming debut EP, “All I Could Do” is very nice in the production department (and diverse too; spanning from classic soul to current indie dance-pop) with a tune that is star level in its quality.

Jo Def – Swim

Jo Def is the latest signee to the awesome Soulection. The jabby West Coast-lean of Sade-sampling single “Swim” serves as his introductory release for the label with an LP Steps (from which “Swim” is excerpted from) on the way in November.

Panama – Always (Wave Racer Remix)

wave racer panama

I’ve said it once and I will say it again – an Aussie remixing an Aussie is a winning formula. This time around it is a Future Classic party of Panama’s “Always” done up nicely from buzzing producer and labelmate, Wave Racer. The new single from the Sydney quintet has legs by itself and a nice remix from CLASSIXX, but this Wave Racer synth explosion is the icing on the cake. Scope it below. Reviewed By Brian Litwin
