Works of great critical acclaim often suffer from a backlash against their popularity, not through any fault of the creative enterprise but rather the whims and caprices of the general public. For example, we’ve become sick of hearing that The Beatles released five of arguably the top ten albums of all time (Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s, White Album, Abbey Road), or that Dylan released three of the top twenty over a period of less than eighteen months (Bringing it All Back Home, Highway 61, Blonde on Blonde). Especially with the proliferation of information, hearsay via the opinions of others provides a sustainable mode of expression. Why restate the opinion of 1,000 others to change an adjective or preposition?
Lovers of “alternative rock music” are understandably sick of hearing about In the Aeroplane over the Sea, which has been lauded unconditionally for as long as there’s been rock journalism on the internet. We’ve grown to take the combo of feedback and irony for granted, but Jeff Magnum is one of the best exporters of the style, on full display during all 39 minutes of his 1998 magnum opus. Become best friends with that tortured writer across the hall if you live in Boston and they have tickets to Magnum’s concert at Jordan Hall on Sept. 10th. Tracks 1-4 of In the Aeroplane are sublime, but the rest of the album is the glue which gives the LP its infinite replay value. If you’re an Oasis fan, make that if you’re a music fan, then you have waited for this. You’ve likely contemplated at some point, ‘what would Noel Gallagher do if he weren’t in Oasis?’ (of course, your worse fear being that it would just sound like Oasis).
A few days ago Noel released a choral and strings version of a track that we had first heard of from a soundcheck in Brazil in 2009. Clearly the song has gone places. Noel has completed 2 studio LP’s which are seeming less like a Le Noise approach in favor of something more George Martin, more Burt Bacharach, more cinematic, more “The Importance of Being Idle”. Not that we’re complaining, “The Death Of You And Me” is epic and High Flying Birds is sure to be nothing short.

• Virgin Mobile FreeFest will be held late this summer at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD.
• FreeFest has always been about giving back. In 2009, the festival started as a way lighten things up in the face of a rough economy while drawing more attention to The RE*Generation, the company’s platform to address youth homelessness.
• In the past two years, the Festival has raised nearly $300,000 and generated more than 55,000 hours of volunteer time.
• Since Virgin Mobile picks up the cost of tickets, they ask that everyone donate $10 or their time to volunteer for RE*Generation. People who volunteer at the Festival are “FreeIPs” and automatically receive a ticket, a hard to come by commodity as tickets normally “free-out” quickly.

To be one of the lucky few who get to actually announce the lineup in a special video that will feature none other than the one and only Sir Richard Branson, you’ll need to get familiar with the following ASAP:
1. A webcam.
2. Being a fan of Virgin Mobile Live’s Facebook page.
3. Be available to record a 5 minute video with your webcam between 8 am EST Wednesday July 6 and 12 Noon EST Thursday July 7.
Now here is what you need to do:
1. Email [email protected] with code word BLAHBLAHBLAHSCIENCE in the email. Send them your name, phone number and zipcode, and make your case.
2. The first 10 qualified applicants who e-mail [email protected] stand the best chance of consideration so don’t wait!
3. Winners will be selected to record a video clip along with 2 tickets to this year’s Virgin Mobile FreeFest at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland later this summer.
