Leo Kalyan – Fingertips

leokalyan

Leo Kalyan is the London-based organic beatmaker and singer-songwriter who we featured on B3 last November for his SHIFt K3Y co-written 90’s vibe R&B stunner track “Stranger”. Kalyan just released his awesome new track “Fingertips” which is a gorgeous vocaled subtle-beat tinged R&B track from the talented new artist’s forthcoming July-release, “Silver Linings” EP. Check out Kalyan on tour with Jess Glynne this summer and get familiar with his excellent body of work including his very stellar, 2015 released “Stranger Mixtape”. Kalyan plans to launch his new EP with a performance at London’s Waiting Room on July 29th. Reviewed by Erin Shay.

IAMNOBODI – 008

iamnobodi

Germany-based producer Iamnobodi teams up with Street Dreams Magazine & Soulection on their Create and Explore project which is a rad cross-medium art project in which “beat makers are paired with photographers in order to create and explore the power of creative collaboration”. The multi-artist project, which took place over about a year, resulted in an incredible series of tracks and videos that are each an individual testament to a “collaboration in sight and sound”. New track “008”, the latest release and C & E series topper from Iamnobodi, is a jazzy, brightly lit R&B-tinged sound-scape that provides a lively beat-driven accompaniment to its respective video which (unlike the other videos from the series which were narrower in scope) is a recap of the impromptu North American multi-artist 15-city photo-walk tour for the project. We are impressed with the level of passion and collaboration between the artists involved in the process. Be sure to check out the videos of this star-studded producer/photographer series on the C & E website as they are quite cool! Reviewed by Erin Shay.

LEISURE – Hot Love

leisure2

LEISURE’s debut track “Got It Bad” became a bit of thing on blogs back in April, ringing up 180k plays Soundcloud and topping the Hype Machine Popular Chart. Today, the Auckland NZ collective follow up “Got It Bad” with the equally strong and no less funky “Hot Love”. LEISURE hit that ideal nexus between accessibility and progressive arty arrangement and for us the most immediate comparison has to be the soul-driven electro of Jungle. Well done.

Rave’s Fave: Alabama Shakes – Miss You

alabamashakes

Is there anyone on a modern stage among newer artists that sings with more soul than Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes? That would be hard to imagine. Check out “Miss You”, a deeper track from the band’s sophomore Sound and Color album. It starts out quietly but sure doesn’t stay that way. While you’re at it, check out video from their Coachella sets, or their recent Jimmy Fallon appearance. Reviewed by Bruce Rave

LA producer and Soulection feature-artist esta. joins up with trap/house/jazz aficionado Masego (who contributed trap scats and sax on the track) to create a super catchy jazzy-instrumental-infused jam which is based on a clever meld of samples from Childish Gambino and Phony Ppl; hence the name, “Childish People”. Raleigh Ritchie – Never Say Die

raleighritchie

Another of the collaborations between UK artist Raleigh Ritchie and Kendrick Lamar/TDE producer Sounwave has surfaced in the shape of “Never Say Die”. On the track, R.R. opines woefully over the geographic distribution of his recent heartbreaks (Paris, L.A., Brighton are not spared) to the complement of Sounwave’s wavy West Coast production. Samm Henshaw – Better

sammhenshaw

21-year old UK singer Samm Henshaw is maybe the best vocalist to emerge in indie music so far this year. Gifted with a D’Angelo-esque falsetto and John Legend-level sense of melody, ballad-y track “Better” is indicative of an artist that has very little between him and stardom. Samm Henshaw will release his debut EP “The Sound Experiment” on July 17.
