“Lady” by tUnE-yArDs, Angelique Kidjo, Ahmir ‘?uestlove’ Thompson & Akua Naru is not just a mouthful but quite the earful too, in a good way of course. This interesting collaboration pulls together African singer Angelique Kidjo’s and Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs’ vocals with rapper Akua Naru and The Roots’ drummer ?uestlove for a blinding re-make of “Lady” by the Nigerian Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti. What’s more – this is just the first track from the forthcoming album (RED) Hot + FELA as part of an AIDS awareness initiative. To support the course you can download Lady from the iTunes link below. Theo keeps heading down the road of an outside-the-box head space with this new Twin Shadow produced track from his forthcoming Rose Island release. The new collab “Golden” yields as much new wave, coastal beach vibes as it does hip-hop r&b. (PS – you know somewhere down the line there had to be some discussion about adding a steel drum somewhere on this track.)

We love this. New duo Roane Namuh & Reva DeVito offer up something-fresh a take on RnB and soul. There’s a chemistry on their latest Cloudshine release. The album track “Frozen” is especially drenched in sultriness with a digable nod to the ’93 Top 15 (Billboard 100) “Rebirth of Slick”. Cloudshine is available to stream at their BandCamp. Give it a spin thru.

Swagger by Fly Golden Eagle is a funky gem that pushes the limits of musical irony with witty pointed lyrics, soulful jing-jangle and playful cult-classic mystique. Check out “Take You There” off of the album.

Bobby Caldwell’s 1978 “What You Won’t Do For Love” is one of the coolest tracks ever. Sure it’s a touch cheesy and the late 70’s/early 80’s produced inside a refrigerator thinness of the mixing isn’t ideal either but those melodies, that arrangement, our dude Bobby C., the track on a pure song basis is nearly perfect. Enter, Jessie Ware, one of our favorite singers period right now, and the combination is just superb. Don’t miss it.

One of our favorite singers anywhere right now turns in a spare (backed only by bass guitar) cover of one of our favorite songs ever, Donny Hathaway’s “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know”. Spoiler Alert: It’s awesome.

Harlan’s Native Son EP is a delightful pop carousel, one of my fav EPs as of late, with heady hooks to be enjoyed by music lovers of all ages. Per the Echo: “It has been described as Prince meets Genesis meets Shuggie Otis.” However, songs like “I Never” also show off a Nilsson Schmillson variety involving the rare juxtaposing of whimsicality and self-seriousness. Sprinklings of da Doobie Bros and Jamiroquai can be detected as well. We’re mightily stoked here @ B3SCI for his May residency at the Echo, one of the more exciting in recent memory. Harlan can hit all the notes and plays just about every instrument as well. And right when you think you’ve heard it all, there’s that desert rock guitar on the EP’s title track. Absolutely righteous!
