Alicia Keys – Typewriter

alicia

New old Alicia. “Typewriter” finds Mrs. Beatz carefully crooning over a deep 90’s backbeat. The track was recorded as part of the Songs in A Minor sessions and was left off that seminal LP. A few listens in, I think we’re feeling this early aughts Mariah-esque jam. How are y’all feeling about it? p.s. Listen for the choral interlude on “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” toward the end of track, its dope as hell.

Mac Miller – Family First (Feat. Talib Kweli)

macmiller

Mac dropped this new laidback reflective track to celebrate cracking 500,000 followers on Twitter. Mac’s rhymes are OK but we’re into this mainly ’cause of the Talib feature, which rips. Get into the track below.

Gold Fields – The Woods

goldfields

New heat from down under. Gold Fields a five piece from Ballarat, OZ, fall somewhere between the electro polyrhythms and jagged guitar of New Order and the punchier, more frenetic sounds of more contemporary synth pop. Give the excellent “The Woods” a spin below.

Look at the Fields – Till’ The World Ends (Google Guitar Doodle Britney Spears Cover)

britneytilltheworldends

Remember that super cool Les Paul-tribute Google doodle from last week that you could actually play? Yeah, that was awesome. If not for a lack of mouse dexterity I’d have totally nailed “Semi-Charmed Life” on it. Floridian indie band used the doodle to record a quiet, almost eerie version of Britney’s “Till’ The World Ends” and it’s awesome! Click the vid below to see how they did it. (It’s amazing!) p.s. We totally just used Les Paul’s name and Britney Spears’ name in the context of one blog post. We totally just took it there.

Aimee Allen – Calling the Maker

aimeeallen

Yeah! Tell us what it is, girl! Gwen Stefani, Gaga, Peter Gabriel, Timberlake, lots of vocal influences to pick out here. The Gwen influence is the most evident here though, listen to some of those vocal affectations in the verses. For “Calling the Maker”, a few big beats, some really big hooks, and a little bit of soul all cook together here excellently and amount to great track from Aimee Allen. Tell us what y’all think.
