Brisbane AU 24-year old Angharad Drake impresses on sullenly beautiful new one “Baby”. Gifted with an evocative vocal with a unique affecting timbre, Ms. Drake effectively communicates a narrative of some of love’s more isolating passages on “Baby”.

The impressive “The First Thing You See” is the third entry in Northampton UK native Bruno Major’s 12 month release project. Fresh from a supporting stint for Lianne La Havas, the quickly rising Major draws from a creative palette of James Blake/Jamie Woon-styled electronic-aided eclecticism crossed with a deep internalization (very clear melodically on “The First Thing You See”) of melodic prime movers like Chet Baker and Ella Fitzgerald. We love “The First Thing You See” and we love Bruno Major. Listen.
A sublime and magnetic vocal, an evocative and transportive tranche of a production choices and instrumentation, and a run of melodies and tunefulness that is just wrecking to one’s central viscera (enough hyperbole for you?), Rodes Rollins’ “Young & Thriving” is some very very good dark pop. One of the best debut tracks of the year.
The slow emotive burn of “Golden Hour” is the latest from BK-based COTE. Fixed on a detached central whirl of quiet drums and heart-wringing harmonies “Golden Hour” shows of a further thoughtful and accomplished layer of COTE’s writing/artistry. Get interested in “Golden Hour” above and check out “London” from earlier this year which we loved too.
Out today from 20-year old producer Flybear is “Lies”, the second track from his forthcoming debut EP “Night Hike”. On “Lies”, which follows follows breakthrough song “Soon…”, Flybear excels through a FlyLo-esque threading of organic instrumentation and grooves within the idiom of state-of-the-genre bass music. Flybear’s particular iteration of that blend sets apart from the greater majority of his beats/bass music peers, e.g. “Lies” sounds fresh and dynamic vs. is tired/blatant Youtube stream-hunting. We dig Flybear and we dig “Lies” which is available to spin above now via B3 Premiere. Lies is available now on Big Beat.
Kultur is one of my all time favorite artists. This time, he’s teamed up with Jessel Alejo, a talented vocalist, and crafted the track, “Unravel.” From start to finish, this track is pure beauty. Enjoy.
The sweeping bass pop of “Test” is the latest from L.A. artist SARO. Reminding production-wise of Mura Masa with a hint melodically of Top 40 pop, the Robin Hannibal-produced (Rhye, Quadron, Jessie Ware) track hits a rewarding balance between cache and accessibility. Get introduced to SARO below with “Test”.
HINDS announce the deluxe version of their Leave Me Alone release with a new cover of “Holograma” by Madrid-based pals Los Nastys. The Spanish language track is one of a series of b-sides, covers, and outtakes that will components of the Leave Me Alone deluxe edition. Give “Holograma” a spin below.
Artist/producer Figgy teams with Body Language singer Angelica Bess on kinetic new 80’s boogie-powered “Take It Back”. Featuring Figgy’s melodic 80’s R&B-influenced production and a cool float-on-top the groove vocal from BL’s Angelica Bess, “Take It Back” marks a new pop songwriting turn for the producer (and we’re into it). “Take It Back” is available for your streaming pleasure below.
“Closer” is the lead track from UK artist Henry Green’s forthcoming “Real” EP for Akira Records. The plaintive acoustic guitar-driven “Closer” earns it’s dough on a stunning set of moving melodies and it’s unexpected turns of subtle electronic production. The resulting effect is pretty extraordinary and transportive. Listen to “Closer” below.
If you like Frank Ocean, you gotta check out one of the most underrated R&B artist’s in the game, houston kendrick. On his latest track, ‘Hey Now’ (ft. Zach Taylor), what feels like references to early 90’s R&B is reworked into a modern electronic banger. Silk smooth beats and vocals give this track a chilled out vibe perfect for the weekend. Enjoy.
The Denver-based production maven STéLOUSE first new track in many months on Andrew Paley-featuring “Let Go”. “Let Go” sounds in its production unlike just about anything out right now (check that complex bit of instrumental meshing between 0:50-1:10) and the big-sounding track has a fitting vocal complement in singer Paley’s soaring melodic choices. Stream “Let Go” below.
