it’s a new music blowout! everything must go! everything! here are three tunes we’re really feeling here at b3sci HQ. the hickey underworld comes to us straight outta belgium with some seriously killer RIFFS, get back honky cat! second, “pretty brown eyes” by r&b power plant amerie, the song features trey songz and pretty much owns anything on the latest mariah/mary j boring albums. and last, we’re not exactly sure what the fuck washed out is but we’re pretty sure we have it in deep rotation! september 17, 2009, don’t player hate, participate.

after his role as bass player with The La’s, John Power took his tunes and guitar skills on to a new project in Liverpool called Cast. the result, no-frill rock n roll… with timing that coincided with the rekindling of britpop in the early and mid 90’s. “Free Me” was the debut single off their sophomore release Mother Nature Calls. various member projects since.. Echo & the Bunnymen, Robert Plant, The La’s, Kula Shaker, Shack, blahl.bahbl,ah
few brilliant tunes, from a brilliant band. new record/lineup we anxiously await your arrival..
soul singer kaye-ree “is bringing change by bridging the gap of old and new”, …that bridging of old and new is apparent on the persian-german songstress’ tune “reality”. kaye-ree’s contemporary r&b-informed (and just beautiful) melody is married to the track from cru’s 1997 classic “just another case”; a song itself that samples rhythm’s gorgeous 1976 r&b jam “the world is a place”. that said, it’s right clear to us that kaye-ree comes as advertised; displaying a great taste/feel/literacy for the music that’s come before her.
kaye-ree’s debut record “endless melody” is out now. props to soulbouncefor hipping us to her.

“Come To Grief” is the first single off The Molotovs debut “mini” LP And The Heads Did Roll, due September 21 via Fierce Panda. these London lads make use of a punchy brass section to counter the track’s ironically positive-toned melancholy refrain. “City’s Guest” is unique in it’s own right as well, with one of our favorite vocal arrangements of ’09. basically The Molotovs are both everything and nothing else happening in the indie rock world, with some of the best written songs we’ve heard yet this year..
a new supergrass side project produced by nigel godrich of radiohead, beck, travis, McCartney, REM, etc fame that showcases Gaz and Dan recording some of their favorite tunes. and low and behold, it sounds like well… supergrass covering songs. SURPRISE!
now, we like the songs and their version of The Velvet Underground’s “I Can’t Stand It” particularly kills it. and we dig supergrass. but do we like side projects focused on cover songs? well i guess who cares what we like..
The Hot Rats – “I Can’t Stand It”
The Hot Rats – “Drive My Car”
Supergrass – “Seen The Light”
here at b3sci, we love chicago and quite right we also love rock and roll, and third we love to get down. so using that scale lets see how the yolks stack up… the yolks are a three piece band from chicago (+1). the yolks play some great fuckin’ rock and roll (+2). and “wandering” is just one of the many tunes on the band’s self-titled LP we can seriously get down to . (+3)

Soulive – “Prototype” (Feat. Nigel Hall)
jazz outfit soulive enlist the pipes of portland, maine soul singer nigel hall on this cover of the andre 3000 tune. “prototype” (the song) is well enough that it would be a good look on more or less any competent singer in the genre. but nigel hall’s delivery of dre’s really just flat out gorgeous melody lines really got our attention. props to soulive for seeking out this collaboration.

cleaner than the prior live version, the first single “Circles” offers a glance into As Tall As Lions 3rd Studio LP dropping August 18. the band also has an additional track titled “In Case of Rapture” which explores some great instrumental ideas, only available on their myspace. you can’t take it with you is one of our most anticipated releases of the year, stay tuned..

Led Zepplin – “Going to California”
sounds exactly like something pj would rock nowadays. a catchy tune with a forced and fairly uncomplementary bridge. but there’s hints of improvement from their ’06 self titled release..
so is anybody surprised that their new record Backspacer will be released exclusively through target? no?? are we suprised that there will be promotional commercials directed by none other than Cameron Crowe? nope, but we’ll definitely watch. now, are we suprised that the first we heard this song was 30 seconds during a commercial during the All Star game? nada. BUT are we surprised that this anti-establishment band hates BP Amoco. yes. my guess is that they didn’t give PJ free gas for their world tour. bastards. still, regardless of how you feel about them, eddie vedder is clearly one of the best frontmen and rock vocalists of all time. watch his performance of The Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me” on VH1 rock honors, and tell me he’s not a natural. btw anybody know if page/plant got royalties for “given to fly”?
