Dennis Coffey – All Your Goodies Are Gone (Feat. Mayer Hawthorne) (Shigeto Remix)

denniscoffey

Guitarist Dennis Coffey is a legend. As a member of the Funk Brothers, Coffey played on countless classic tracks for the Motown label, The Temptations’ “Cloud Nine”, The Supremes “Someday Will Be Together” (my personal favorite Supremes’ tune), Edwin Starr’s “War”, etc. That is a serious resume. In April, the guitarist, as part of a self-titled LP, released “All Your Goodies Are Gone”, a collaboration with fellow Detroit-native (via Ann Arbor) and b3sci fav Mayer Hawthorne. Here on this remix of “Goodies” by another b3sci fav Shigeto, the track gets a future soul run, complete with spacey synth and vibed out rhythms; a remix we wouldn’t be surprised to hear turn up on an upcoming Gilles Peterson show. Stream the track below.

Sleeping In The Aviary – Talking Out of Turn

sleepingintheaviary

Raucous offering from Minneapolis five-piece Sleeping in the Aviary. The sound is so effortless it could’ve been captured in a single take. With a couple albums already under their belt, they’ve honed in on their sound – they don’t need to rely on third-party speculation to catapult them onto ITunes playlists. Check out their recent daytrotter sesh or their myspace page – their website is hilariously terrifying as well. Would pay a cool shilling to see these cats in the City of Angels.

LIPS – Everything to Me

66305_120414231349882_116671135057525_144795_1832311_n

Lips is the byname of Kiwi by way of Brooklyn artist Steph Brown. “Everything to Me” succeeds on its beautiful carefully phrased melodies and expertly layered instrumental syncopation. Listening to the laid back track, you’ll likely find yourself at ease, cool, calm with the track; but there’s enough rhythm, enough movement in the track that you’ll probably also find yourself bobbing your head; the best sort of marriage for tunes of its style.

Lucy Rose – Gamble Like I Used To

lucyrose

Listening to “Gamble Like I Used To” is an exercise in hanging on a singer’s every note. Lucy Rose’s voice is dulcet and sweet but its also very very striking. The notes are soft but really precise. They’re so carefully crafted. An acoustic guitar whispers, chimes warmly ring; the entire track is great but a major payoff comes in the song’s last 90 seconds; where the tune builds to a catharsis, its a gentle hushed catharsis, but its still no less powerful. Really good. Get familiar below.

Jesse Boykins III – Back Home (Mermaids & Dragons) (Prod. Gold Panda)

jb32

b3sci fav Jesse Boykins III returns w a new Gold Panda produced track. We’re defniitely feeling this electro-tinged change of pace for JBIII. And while the track maybe heavily synthesized/processed, colder, Boykins’ smooth tenor keeps the tune up on a steady slow burn.

Laura Marling – A Creature I Don’t Know

marling

“A Creature I Don’t Know” is the lead single from Ms. Marling’s upcoming third LP of the same name due in September. “A Creature I Don’t Know” represents a realization and maturity in Marling’s writing and vocal stylings. She’s confident, she’s on top the tune, she’s bleeding out the track. It’s great.

Martin Solveig – The Night Out

solveig

One of the first jams I immediately went for the repeat button on in a couple weeks. Our buddies at SKOA just called “hit” on this new Martin Solveig track. We are seconding. “The Night Out” is big. UK Top 40 big. And likely one of Summer 2011’s most remixed tracks. Stay tuned.

The Horrors – Still Life

horrors

New shit from The Horrors. Are you psyched? “Still Life” sounds a lot like Simple Minds, a little like Oasis (listen to the phrasing and rhythms in the choruses), and a little like Keane. Like Meat Loaf, at b3sci two out of three still ain’t bad, and we’re feeling the tune. Give this one a couple listens and you’ll likely be hooked too.

Mayer Hawthorne – A Long Time

mayer-hawthorne-long-time

“A Long Time” is fresh from Mayer Hawthorne. The new single comes in anticipation of his sophomore full length How Do You Do, to be released on Universal Republic later this year. The track stays true and it will be interesting to hear how it plays on the LP, and preludes what’s still to come.
