RAVE’S FAVE: The Cribs – Chi-Town

By Bruce Rave

the-cribs-chi-town-608x608

One of my fave bands of the past decade. The Cribs return and are again the original threesome (minus Johnny Marr). I like what they did with JM, but I think their best stuff came earlier. That extra rawness returns and they sing about my native city of Chicago. An ideal taste from their album, which arrives in May. An official single will be emerging soon.

The Cribs live @ The Roxy Monday November 9, 2009

The Cribs – Last Year’s Snow
The Cribs – You’re Gonna Lose Us

The Cribs tore through a classic energy induced set at The Roxy this past Monday, with new fourth member, legendary guitarsmith Johnny Marr. and while he may be almost old enough to be their pops, the chemistry between marr and the other cribs was no less notable. sporting t-shits, leather biker jackets and early Richard Hell vs. current Kings of Leon butch haircuts, The Cribs wasted no time bashing out some brash gritty rock n roll.

the set was bold, unabashed. there was no banter between songs; aside from a request from Ryan Jarmen, that the lights be turned off in between songs (so the band could “look like rockstars”). and after their full-on feedback masterpiece of an ending to the set, there was no encore. and why should there have been? The Cribs had already put it all out front and on the table, the set being everything rock n roll and right fuckin classy. this was a classy fuckin’ show. fuckin’ class rock and roll.

kicking off on a high note with a new stomping anthem “We Were Aborted” from their latest release Ingnore the Ignorant, The Cribs then rolled straight into fan favorite and a somewhat ironic West LA theme on the night, “Hey Scenesters”. from there things soared, as the 4 piece performed a diversed set from their entire catalogue including favorites as “Men’s Needs,” “What About Me,” “Things Aren’t Gonna Change” and new favorites “Last Year’s Snow” and the single “We Share the Same Skies”. i found myself reflecting on a few things throughout this set:

1. these guys are fucking punk rock
2. this band belongs in clubs absolutely packed with 200 drunks spilling beer, slamming into each other, shouting at the stage and throwing their fists in the air..
3. Marr is a perfect addition, wayyy more appropriate than that Modest Mouse thing.
4. are those two really twins?
5. how do they keep doing that shit with their voice?!

In conclusion, The Cribs are the type of band that is imperfect in all the perfect ways. the groups fourth studio LP Ignore the Ignorant, released yesterday November 10th in the states, has shaped to be one of our favorites of the year. if you haven’t checked it out yet, then get familliar. also, stay tuned to b3science for an exclusive interview with the band..

The Cribs -“We Share the Same Skies”

the-cribs-marr-4

“we share the same skies” has marr’s signature all over it. sure blahjohnny.blahblahmarr, but gotta hand it to the man.. he’s a barnacle when it comes to a good project. since his days with morrissey and co. he’s added his influence to projects with Talking Heads, Pet Shop Boys, Beck, Oasis, The Pretenders, Bernard Sumner, and Black Grape to name a few, in addition to current status as official member of Modest Mouse and now The Cribs. And until The Smiths get back together, which most likely won’t happen unless i win the lottery and offer them all my money, his work here with The Cribs will definitely suffice..

The Cribs fourth studio LP dropped last week in the UK and it will have an “official” US release mid-November (available now for download). it showcases Jarmen bros. and co. in fine form. “Cheat On Me” really grows. they’ll be in NY and LA for 3 days amidst their current tour schedule.. can’t, won’t, must-not miss them

The Cribs – “Cheat On Me”

the-cribs1

that blood is most def from getting all vampire on Johnny Marr’s sweet guitar love. “Cheat On Me” is the first single from Ignore the Ignorant due September 7th, and it’s done some serious growing on us. the chorus vocals kill it, Jarmans’ throat sounds like he smashed a bottle of J.d. in it.. serving as a reminder for us all that The Cribs will kick your ass if you fuck with them

This Many Boyfriends – (I Should Be A) Communist

this-many-boyfriends

Leeds based This Many Boyfriends are releasing a new Ryan Jarman (The Cribs) produced single of their song “(I Should Be A) Communist”. The tune has a catchy melody and carefree swing reminiscent of The Smiths but with a grungier lo-fi dynamic that plays to the new generation of indie rock disenfranchised. Plus “Commie” comes in towe with a pretty sweet video that stars a costumed bear attacking the band as they pretend to rock out in the park. “(I Should Be A) Communist” is expected to be release on May 21st through Angular Recording Corporation. Get it.
