Some tracks you just can’t stop listening too. Everyone’s fave Danish duo ring in a decade of hauntingly sweet records with their forthcoming and impressively solid seventh studio album Observator. The album of which was recorded in an incredible seven days with producer Richard Gottehrer (credits include Blondie, Go-Gos, Richard Hell), holds true to The Raveonettes signature sound and prolific pop song appetite. New single “The Enemy” previewed here, particularly showcases the bands affinity for those glittery guitar songs, harkening bands from The Smiths to The Beatles, and those between (plus we’re sure some NME puns intended).

What might that Richards/Taylor guitar work on “Gimme Shelter” look like if it lurked in the night as some sort of docile pill induced zombie? Moments in The Raveonettes new single “Observations” feel harmoniously possessed by the iconic track’s six string weepiness. The song, from The Raveonettes forthcoming and sixth studio album Observator premiered today on Rolling Stone, and has a certain duality in addition that soul chilling pocket the band explore so well. Hat tips to the Danish duo yet again.

The Raveonettes cast their line out into the tempest that is the holiday song. Originally recorded in 2001, “The Christmas Song” (I expected this to be a Mel Torme cover too, but sadly, no.) doesn’t exactly sound like your typical Christmas song, it sounds much more like your typical Raveonettes song (+ some jingle bells). So we’re offering this simple phrase for Raveonettes fans from 1 to 92, MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Oh Hi. The Raves join BRMC on the Batman: Arkham City video game! soundtrack with “Oh Stranger”. The track plays mostly by The Raveonettes numbers with a pulsing synth rhythm, faraway female harmonies, and gritty overdriven guitar. Imagine now, Gotham City, a rainsoaked Joker collapsing into Batman’s arms to the dulcet tones of Sune Rose Wagner. Ah.

The Raveonettes rolled into Boston’s Paradise rock club this past Thursday blowing out an approximately 70 minute set that featured heavily tunes from the band’s new Raven in the Grave LP. The Raveonettes are loud. Really loud. Maybe it was the venue, the soundman, the soundsystem, or some combination but the band came of extraordinarly loud, at times a bit to the detriment of the material. We heard guitars, we heard distortion pedals, we heard noise and feedback, but, some of the time, we couldn’t hear the voices, we couldn’t hear the songs.
Sune and Sharin were backed up this time by two side men who alternated between drums (both live and electronic) and guitars and bass. The beefed up rhythm section aided in giving the better songs a strong rhythmic punch.
What we’ve heard from Raven in the Grave we love. This slightly darker, slightly shoegazier sound from The Raves plays brilliantly on record. Recharge & Revolt, War in Heaven, Evil Seeds all draw from and synthesize on the best influences and sounds in The Raveonettes universe (MBV, Ride, etc).
Second song “Evil Seeds” was particularly jarring. The bass in the beat just rips into you. The atmospheres of guitar distortion pull at you further. That intersection of emotive interaction (to the music) and an intense physical reaction (to the actual sounds), it was really powerful.
Sharin would give wry smile to Sune or Sune would sort of shake his arms otherwise there was sort of stoicism from the band, a kind of blankness but it sort of worked. You felt pulverized in sort of systematic way, a sort of monolith of sound. It fit.
“Heart of Stone”, from 2009’s excellent In and Out of Control, was a highlight. The song bounced, jittered, and shook. Sune’s tuneful picking in lockstep to Sharin’s kinetic bass.
We love The Raveonettes. We love Raven in the Grave. The performance… conceptually, it worked. If a concert experience were solely transacted in ideas, this would have been a great show. Technically (venue acoustics, soundman, mixing, levels, etc) it left something to be desired.

Yesssssss. We caught The Raveonettes @ Boston’s Paradise on Thursday Night (review forthcoming!) and “Evil Seeds” was the second song in their set, and wow, the song (which we hadn’t heard yet) just immediately grabs on to you, pulls at you on the most visceral of levels, literally, like when the beat drops and that main guitar figure plays out from Sune Rose Wagner’s guitar you feel like your insides are being ripped out of you. It’s really some feeling. There’s a darkness, a visceral quality to The Raveonettes’ music that’s there to be found if you want to find it; beneath all the pop song melody, jangly guitars, it’s there.

More new Raveonettes material continues to surface. This time it’s the dreamy slow burn of “War in Heaven”. Vaguely electronic drum tones, layered delay-driven guitars, Sharin’s hushed vocal. Classic Raves.

Yet another permutation of The Raveonettes sound on this demo for new tune “Recharge & Revolt”. The Raves sound like a bunch of other bands, stylistic mutation to stylistic mutation, they liberally pillage any number of influences (Jesus and Mary Chain to MBV to ’60’s Pop) yet they always sound like The Raveonettes. “Recharge & Revolt” feels a bit more from the MBV, Ride territory of influence but is still 100% (pure love) Raveonettes. Great melodies, great male-female harmonies, excellent guitar layering and arranging all the hallmarks of good quality Raves shit. Raven in the Grave, the band’s upcoming LP is due in April. Psyched!

awwwww no we didn’t! awwww yeah we did! we’re totally on about this new raveonettes record, “in and out of control”. the LP, from which “gone forever” and “d.r.u.g.s.” are both excerpted, is one of our fav records of 2009. “in and out of control” sees the danish duo on, if not the best material of their career, the band’s best in several years. we like the raveonettes best at their more darker moments (ie. lust from 2007’s “lust lust lust” record). both “gone forever” and “d.r.u.g.s.” realize that darker, minor key, rhythmically driven, melodically syncopated sound; a sound that’s not only infinitely listenable but cool as fuck too. get into it.
