Rave’s Fave: Beady Eye – Second Bite of the Apple

beady-eye-second-bite-of-the-apple

This second emerging track from Beady Eye’s June album is arguably better than the first strong song, “Flick of the Finger”. This song also has horns, with an interesting groove underneath. Meanwhile Liam Gallagher is doing his best to fan the flames, stating he’ll retire if this album doesn’t do well. Based on these first two tracks, I don’t think that will be a concern. He also remarked on a photo of brother Noel hugging Blur’s Damon Albarn, saying that pic marks “the end of Britpop.” By Bruce Rave

Rave’s Fave: Beady Eye – Flick of the Finger

Beady-Eye-Flick-of-the-Finger

Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye is back, and “Flick Of the Finger” is our first taste. It’s got that Liam intensity, augmented with a consistently present and bold horn section along with some spoken word parts. It’s a winner for me, and hopefully for you as well. We’ll hopefully hear the entire album in June. Liam is saying it will be “pretty druggy”.

Beady Eye – Blue Moon

blue-moon-beady-eye

Laid back is how we like our Fridays. Take Beady Eye’s cover of “Blue Moon” for example. Liam’s croon is gentle as ever, with the band almost framed in a world that John Lennon could have had for “Free As A Bird”. Not to make the cliche but rather to point out how even Lennon must have been inspired by the standard ballad made famous by both of John and Liam’s (and everyone’s) mentor ‘The King’. Either way, this cover is mint.

Beady Eye – The Beat Goes On

beadyeye

“The Beat Goes On” indeed for the zombie Oasis incarnate a.k.a. Beady Eye. The geezers carry on here with former Oasis bassist and Ride frontman Andy Bell on writing duties. The tune treads a familiar territory for the personnel assembled (a little Beatles, a little Stones, a little Kinks), that said, its a successful traverse of that well worn territory; with Liam coming off the best he’s sounded on record in some time.

Beady Eye – World Outside My Room

beadyeyetheroller

On “World Outside My Room” Liam & co. flip the script with this quieter b-side number. Liam’s voice sounds a more youthful more puerile tone. For a moment, at least on this track, the sneering, the posturing, the qualities about Liam that can at times isolate him as an artist from his vocal performance are replaced with an ease and nonchalance. Notions that better connect with the simple song’s whimsical, sort of adolescent content. Liam sounds 21 years old, 18 years old, 16 years old on this track. Love it.

Beady Eye – The Roller

liam

Best we’ve heard yet from the Beady Eye geezers. “The Roller” is the sort of minor key stomper in-their-prime Oasis could knock off in their sleep (or more likely whilst tripping balls). As to be expected with latter-day Liam vox, the Lennon aping is on full go here, from the the way the vocals are done up in the mix to the, um, actual vocals themselves. But still the tune is super cool, so fix up, look sharp, let the beat rock, all that, and press play.

Beady Eye – Four Letter Word

liam-beady-eye-different-gear-still-speeding

Here’s our second glimpse of what’s to come on Beady Eye’s forthcoming Different Gear, Still Speeding debut which drops February 28 on the bands own label, Beady Eye Records Ltd. “Four Letter Word” sounds much more Oasis than it’s predecessor, “Bring The Light”, and minus a fab melody and apocalyptic themed guitar riff, the song’s lyrics are really what Liam’ify this track to the next level. The frontman himself has been quoted, “The tunes are as good as ‘Definitely Maybe’, if not better,” and while we dig the Beady Eye sound, and think Lillywhite has done them some justice, thus far we’re skeptical.

“Four Letter Word” comes in tow with a slick new psych-rock Julian House and Julian Gibbs directed music video that originally debuted on the NME. The track is available in a limited, heavy-weight, numbered 7″ which features the b-side, “World Outside My Room”. Score yours on the Beady Eye website here.

Beady Eye – Sons of the Stage

beady-eye-single

Liam and the boys make good on the b-side of their new 7-inch with a remake of the 1991 underground NY hit “Sons of the Stage”, from indie-brits World of Twist. It’s a psychedelic stomper and we love it. This tune wants you to dance.. so DANCE!

Beady Eye‘s debut LP is expected February 28. They also recently announced a handful of European tour dates (below). Apparently the band will be in Europe during the end of March… no SXSW guys? Get a free download of “Bring The Light” at the bands website HERE

Beady Eye – Bring The Light

beadyeye

“Bring The Light” is the new and first offering from Liam Gallagher‘s post-Oasis group, Beady Eye. With a full-length Steve Lillywhite produced debut expected to drop in early 2011, this band of former Oasis members Gem Archer, Andy Bell, and touring drummer Chris Sharrock [plus unofficials: Jay Darlington (keys man) and Jeff Wootton (bass man)] is no doubt looking to hit the ground running in the New Year.

I once read a quote along the lines of “Oasis is like religion, you either believe in it or you don’t”. Over time and after many conversations with music fans I’ve learned this happens to be a very true statement. (Whats the Story) Morning Glory was a first album of mine, a collection of songs with such a sound… and Alan White’s drumming was such an ideal complement… it’s needless to say not many albums since have measured up. While Oasis and non-Oasis fans alike may claim that Liam isn’t much of a singer anymore, let alone a songwriter, this album should put such concerns to rest one way or another. In our books, Liam Gallagher ranks one of the best frontmen of all time and we can only hope that he’s got a spark of that brilliant rock-naivety that brother Noel Gallagher seemed to have lost sight of, or interest in, post Be Here Now.

Oasis LPs, Definitely Maybe, Don’t Believe The Truth, Be Here Now all were in heavy rotation here at B3SCI throughout the night until 2:00 am (LA time) as we anticipated the official (UK 10:00 am) release, reminding me of past days waiting at Tower Records for midnight album releases. The track doesn’t disappoint. It’s classic oldskool Rock and Roll with the type of attitude any Oasis fan of the band’s last four albums will appreciate. If you’re one of those expecting “Supersonic” or “Columbia”, then don’t even press play. And one thing is for sure, it’s definitely not the song from the 22 second clip that the band leaked earlier in the week! The release is now available for free download on the band’s website and as a limited 7-inch press that also features a b-side of the groups take on World Of Twist’s “Sons Of The Stage”. Also worth mentioning for all the Shoegaze fans in the house, the former Ride guitarist Andy Bell has turned in his Oasis bass for a guitar in Beady Eye, and along with Gem Archer will be contributing some new songs to the forthcoming album.

In other news, Noel Gallagher, former “Chief” guitarist and Oasis songwriter is expected to drop his solo project sometime next year. Alan McGee (founder of Creation Records) recently mentioned during an interview with BBC Six music that he’s heard some of Noel’s new material, “Noel’s demos are absolutely amazing. Totally amazing. The reason that guy is quiet is he knows what he’s got up his sleeve.” We can’t wait.

THROWBACK SATURDAYS: Oasis – Don’t Look Back In Anger

dont-look-back-in-anger

timeless track, off a timeless album, by a timeless band. legend has it Noel gave little bro Liam the choice to sing either “Don’t Look Back In Anger” or “Wonderwall,” but one of them were gonna be for him. the rest is history and we’re convinced the right decisions were made. also if you can, get your hands on the single. it’s got a great b-side on it called “Step Out,” a would be album track for What’s The Story Morning Glory before rights disputes with Stevie Wonder, and so you have “The Swamp Song” edit instead..

in other Oasis news, Noel has a solo project on it’s way expected to drop by the end of the year, and Liam along with rest of the most recent big O line up have finished a new album as Beady Eye, produced by Steve Lillywhite…. expected in October. and for both, we’re stoked!

info
purchase it all… SERIOUSLY!
