The Dodos w/ The Luyas, Saturday, August 27th, 2011 @ The Autry, Los Angeles

dodos

Everyone who has the chance to spend an extended period of time in Los Angeles should make it a point to visit the Autry Museum of Southwestern Heritage, where The Dodos and Luyas played on Saturday, August 27th. Located right next to the zoo at the southeastern corner of Griffith Park, the museum includes a bevy of Native American artifacts, paintings by the 19th century landscape artists Thomas Moran and Alfred Bierstadt (who worked in many of the same Yosemite locations as Ansel Adams), and even a recreated saloon town. Both bands played in the atrium on the bottom floor to an engaged audience of a couple hundred.

The Luyas drove all the way from Montreal to play on Saturday! It seems an odd choice to begin a tour 3,500 miles from home, but lead singer Jessie Stein remarked between songs that Los Angeles was the only place besides Montreal where the band feels at home. She brings a quirky, Miranda July quality to her performance, experimenting with intonations, even whispering large patches of lyrics. Drummer Stefan Schneider plays with an excellent math rock style, and French horn player Pietro Amato has played with Bell Orchestre and Arcade Fire. Stein’s guitar went mute for a minute during the set, but the band played through and the audience enjoyed the improvisation. Be sure to check out their Too Beautiful to Work LP, which was released via Dead Oceans in February.

DJ cut between sets: “Point That Thing Somewhere Else” by The Clean

The Dodos capitalized off of the energy built during Luyas’ set, as it’s apparent that the bands share many of the same fans. Guitarist Meric Long and Drummer Logan Kroeber maintain a lot of energy without coming off as over-the-top. The two mesh well together. While Luyas’ features more of a rise and fall of action, the Dodos take the best from Neutral Milk Hotel in that even their softest sound has a roughness and intensity to it. If WU FLY plays self-described heavy pop, Dodos play ‘super jangle’. The selections off No Color were interpreted with pinpoint accuracy and the audience loving every minute. Late in the set, Amato joined in for a French horn solo from the concourse above, which was the highlight of the set. A strong showing by the lads from San Francisco. Contributed by Chris Gedos

Wild Nothing – Golden Haze

wild-nothing

“Golden Haze” is the title track off Wild Nothing’s October 2010 EP. Known under the moniker Wild Nothing, Virginia native, Jack Tatum, delivers an emotionally eclectic group of tracks similar to his first album, Gemini. Golden Haze, like its predecessor, offers shoegazy, delicately produced indie pop songs. The undercurrents of “Golden Haze” radiate the influence of Johnny Marr and give us further insight into the guitar-driven monologues that have made Wild Nothing so communicable. Feed Me – Cott’s Face

Electro superstar Feed Me dropped new track “Cott’s Face” on his soundcloud earlier today. Mr. Me does not disappoint on the track serving up a rather generous helping of the heavy melodic beats that make his shit so awesome.

FIRST THOUGHTS: Girls – Father, Son, Holy Ghost

father-son-holy-ghost-girls

I’ve had Girls’ 2nd LP, Father, Son, Holy Ghost, on repeat since last weekend. I knew after hearing the single, ‘Vomit’, that it wouldn’t be a sophomore slump, but I wasn’t expecting all eleven cuts to be of a similarly uniform quality. Father, Son, Holy Ghost doesn’t have the extreme polarity of Album, their debut, but a devotion to songwriting and slightly warmer production values make for an equal if not superior listening experience.

If the sonic point of reference on Album was Joe Strummer, the muse on Father, Son, Holy Ghost has to be Elvis Costello. Lead singer Christopher Owens’ highly publicized upbringing in the Children of God facilitates an influence that’s ostentatious but not heavy-handed. He retains a 1950’s moral compass, grasping onto those last vestiges of innocence. Like Costello, Owens plays 50’s rock with proto-punk panache.

Owens is a master amalgamator and takes the best from his other primary influences, Neil Young, Eric Carmen and Alex Chilton, all of whom, like Costello and Strummer, also hit their creative peak during the 1970’s. ‘How Can I Say I Love You’ and ‘Magic’ are deep cuts that shine through on this album of deep cuts. Probably my favorite American band right now. Catch them at the FYF Fest in LA on September 3rd; they’ll be touring a smattering of American cities from September 14th until October 9th. RAVE’S FAVE: The Rapture – Children

the-rapture-in-the-grace-of-your-love

Talk about worth the wait. The Rapture return as a revitalized 3-piece and bring us In The Grace of Your Love, one of 2011’s best albums. I’ve been listening to it over and over again, partly because I like so many songs that it’s tough to choose a fave. The B3SCI boys have already posted the awesome “Never Die Again“. “Children” is one of the most melodic tracks and it just might have you singing along. It’s in the vein of “Kids”, which makes it a prime radio contender. Contributed by Bruce Rave

weekndthursday

OK, so being real, a few days out now from the release of Thursday, “The Zone” is the only song from the mixtape I’ve spun more than a couple times. Sorry, y’all! Here, MPLS producer Ty Cody laces up Thursday’s creme de la creme track with a syrupy sweet wobbly mix. Give it a listen below.
