Bon Iver – Towers

bon-iver1

“Towers” is a favorite off of Bon Iver’s forthcoming self-titled release. The band explore more instrumentation on the album but have not forgotten who they are. In fact, Bon Iver might even make great prospects for some people like this… who are known to be a little like this. It’s a compliment. It takes a lot to make a great sophomore album after a glowing debut. Bon Iver’s new album will hit stores June 21.

Various Cruelties – She Is The One

she-is-the-one

Various Cruelties keep it timeless with “She Is The One”. Sparse technically and rich in structure, their songwriting continues to speak volumes. More to come from this London group.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – An Ugly Person On A Movie Screen

ite28099s-a-corporate-world

“An Ugly Person On A Movie Screen” is a pretty complex pop song. The track clocks in at 3:12 but not before it takes you on a journey. Some tracks, much like their cover of The Beach Boys, “God Only Knows”, foreshadow Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.’s respect for an art of melody. It’s not an easy craft, and one rarely successful, but occasionally a band comes along that actually gets it. It’s a Corporate World hits stores June 7th.

RAVES FAVE’S: My Morning Jacket – Outta My System

my-morning-jacket-circuital

My Morning Jacket are one of the few bands who truly master any style they wish to pursue. While I don’t think of them as a pop band, they deliver several melodic entries on their new “Circuital” album, which drops next Tuesday May 31. Similar to the title track which deals with life’s journeys, “Outta My System” address’ crossroad questions such as whether to smoke drugs and whether to remain single. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this track getting a fair amount of radio play. Contributed by Bruce Rave

StaG – “I Swim (Bare)” and “Turn Away”

stag-rifle-meeker

To what has become a rather redundant style in the indie soundscape, StaG bring a breath of fresh air. With ambient synths and guitars this Boulder Colorado collective compose music rather than play songs. Here’s a band for the radar.

Wu Lyf – Dirt

wu-lyf

Given all of the hype and ‘secrecy’ surrounding Manchester outfit WU LYF, their material so far speaks for itself. “Dirt” is no exception with a soulful vocal sitting nicely amidst a variety of syncopated concepts, WU LYF continue to peak our curiosity and anticipation to experience them in a live setting. The band has a handful of shows scheduled around the world in the next few months, dates are on their site. Hat tip to b3sci fam Chris Gedos for the heads up on the track.
