PJ Harvey – The Last Living Rose

pj

“The Last Living Rose” is new today from PJ Harvey. The track plays like paean to its singer’s home nation. Weaving imagery of England that winds through the tune’s sing-songy instrumental; an instrumental that acts as a screen for the motion picture reel projecting through the eye of PJ Harvey’s mind. The video’s not half bad either. Get into it below.

Jamie Woon – Night Air (Deadboy Remix)

woon

Deadboy is on some kind of run right now. The South London producer serves up another heater on this flip of the oft-remixed (seriously!) “Night Air” Jamie Woon tune. Interesting flip of the track here as the sound is sort of morphed into a 2010’d Craig David/Daniel Bedingfield kind of feel. Tell us you hear that too (We ain’t crazy!). Regardless, we’re digging it and are eagerly anticipate Deadboy’s next blend.

Casey Veggies – Get Through (Feat. Dom Kennedy)

casey-veggies

A welcome slice of summer in L.A. on this C.A.F. (cold as fuck) New England evening. Dom Kennedy with a brief feature on the track. Let that summer shine in.

Omarion – Morning (Feat. J. Cole)

MTV Studios, Times Square

The ex-B2K crooner grabs Cole for this smooth burner. Sure, Omarion sounds like Drake here (especially in the verses) but the song is good enough to still stand on its own (Aubrey Graham aping or not). Cole on point as usual.

Flux Pavillion x Biggie Smalls – I Can’t Stop (DJ Robin Banks Mash) / Flux Pavillion – Bass Cannon

flux

It’s. the. motherfucking. Flux. Expected to drop official sometime early 2011, “Bass Cannon” is both massive and filthy in all the right ways. Plus.. DJ Robin Banks adds a little Biggie to “I Can’t Stop” making for some knock out moments courtesy of a pleasant yet raw vocal mix.

Soulja Boy – Pretty Boy Swag (Shlohmo Remix)

shlohmo

We original caught this mix during Sholhmo’s set opening for Mount Kimbie in September. It was sick then, and it’s sick now. On another level, literally. Listening to track feels like floating; floating on some sort of Soulja Boy-piloted cosmic MARTA bus bound for Fulton County’s swaggiest interstellar regions. (Bitch u ride it.)

Burial – In McDonalds (Mokhov Ghost Remix)

burial

I think if there’s a schedule of rules or fundamental commandments of dubstep, post-dubstep, whatever, Don’t fuck with Burial should probably be on it. And when I first heard this Burial mix done by Russian-born now U.S. musician Mokhov, I kind of feared for the worst. But maybe 15-20 seconds into the track I was already hooked, that play turned into several and before I knew by late afternoon today I had played the track maybe two dozen times. Something about the measuredness of Mokhov’s drums and how they sort of blended with the track, moved with it, inhaled/exhaled in and out with it that really drew me in. The restraint to keep the remix’s embellishments to a minimum, complementing the simplicity and spaciousness of the original mix, should be noted too. A+, well done.

Rui Da Silva – Touch Me (Jamie xx Remix)

xx

The x man continues his Worldbeating tour of nonstop jams on this flip of the Rui Da Silva track “Touch Me”. A track that minus the semi-dated turn of the century production values could be, in a parallel world of (Imagine!) The xx 10 years ago, an xx track itself. Expect a sonorous blend of caviar percussion tones and champagne synth voicings in the mix. A tip of our tumblers to the ham and eggers over at mymatestretchy on the track.

Crocodiles – Stoned to Death

crocodile

Crocodiles take their Jesus and Mary Chain cover band to the next level on “Stoned to Death”. Shaking free a bit of the overtness of that influence that characterized their earlier releases and into a sound a bit more their own. Introducing a more pointed heaviness, most particulary in the punch of the bass and drum, and a inclination to more hooky melodies, a song like “Stoned to Death” is one of a band in transition, of a band finding a firmer, more individual footing.

Friendly Fires – Strange Love (Depeche Mode Cover)

friendly

From “Paris” to “Jump in the Pool”, Friendly Fires always bring the heat on the choruses. And the out of this world choruses on the band’s cover of Depeche Mode’s “Strange Love” are no exception; a blend of atmospheric house-tinged synths and a falsetto that sounds ripped via satellite from the otherside of galaxy. You could put this cover on American pop radio right now and it’d be a Top 10 hit. It’s that good. It sounds totally fresh, new, and interesting but could still totally slice the charts apart.
