Kaye-Ree – “Reality”

Kaye-Ree – “Reality”

soul singer kaye-ree “is bringing change by bridging the gap of old and new”, …that bridging of old and new is apparent on the persian-german songstress’ tune “reality”. kaye-ree’s contemporary r&b-informed (and just beautiful) melody is married to the track from cru’s 1997 classic “just another case”; a song itself that samples rhythm’s gorgeous 1976 r&b jam “the world is a place”. that said, it’s right clear to us that kaye-ree comes as advertised; displaying a great taste/feel/literacy for the music that’s come before her.
kaye-ree’s debut record “endless melody” is out now. props to soulbouncefor hipping us to her.

Trailer Trash Tracys – “Candy Girl”

trailertrashtracys

as much as we’ve grown to hate the term lo-fi for all of it’s contrived and consequently lo-quality contributions to the indie-music world, London’s Trailer Trash Tracys release “Candy Girl”, a solid yet such sounding new single on a double A-Side with “You Wish You Were Red” this September 14th. the song’s minimal hook latent arrangements showcase it’s most important strength… an incredible melody that sits perfectly within a sensible pop song.. excited for more to come from these guys

Oasis Break Up – “Talk Tonight”

noel-gallgher

“Talk Tonight” was written after Noel Gallagher first left oasis during their ’94 US tour. they weren’t done then, or in 96′ when they started a tour in the states with liam house shopping back home with the misses, they weren’t done in 2000 when noel left the band during their world tour. and there’s more in between, but the point is.. are they actually done now?

hope not. as much slack as this band gets for not being what they were in the 90’s, they are simply one of few, a small handful of bands that can actually still hold it down as a relevant rock and roll band after almost 18 years. should they actually be over this time, it would be a shame. ok – to see noel do a non-accompanied solo tour, neil young style, would be mind blowing. a solo record would be incredible as well. but what wouldn’t be incredible is seeing oasis fall into the “reunion” band category. they’ll do it for the money, fuck the pistols did it, but it’s a sad and uninspiring moment for a band when shit like that happens.

so will another “talk tonight” come out of this break? hope so. it’s clearly one of noel’s best songs ever, and a b-side of course. does any band even have better b-sides than oasis?? either way, to see what happens with the big O in the near future will be an interesting course of events, at least to us. so we’ll keep you posted.

Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons – “Born Again”

Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons – “Born Again”

the son of a baptist minister, cory chisel grew up immersed in the spiritedness of gospel music. a spiritedness that still informs a sound further influenced by iconic artists like howlin’ wolf, aretha franklin, and sam cooke. the native of the upper midwest breathes a refreshing vitality into a sometimes inwardly-focused prosaic genre. we really dig cory (and his wandering sons), if you’re not already up on him, familiarize yourself.

Black Nite Crash – “The Story Of Me And You”

black-nite-crash

this Seattle band rocks fo sho, but it’s more like.. the story of me waiting for this track to go somewhere. still not as solid “falling down”, post-shoegaze guitar riffs and the raveonettes will always do me just fine. “The Story Of Me And you” is off the new split-single with The Tamborines via Custom Made Music

Vula – “Rock the Boat” (Aaliyah Tribute)

lifted from the soulculture uk “aaliyah revisted” tribute EP, this killer cover of “rock the boat” by east london, uk soul singer and basement jaxx collaborator vula wow’d the shit out of us. the entire EP is loaded with bangers… we’re too diggin on afta-1’s space soul interpretation of “4 page letter” and tawiah’s transatlantic “nOUGHty nOUGHty”s on her go at “are you that somebody?”. we love aaliyah, RIP, baby girl.

The Molotovs – “Come To Grief” and “City’s Guest”

the-molotovs8

“Come To Grief” is the first single off The Molotovs debut “mini” LP And The Heads Did Roll, due September 21 via Fierce Panda. these London lads make use of a punchy brass section to counter the track’s ironically positive-toned melancholy refrain. “City’s Guest” is unique in it’s own right as well, with one of our favorite vocal arrangements of ’09. basically The Molotovs are both everything and nothing else happening in the indie rock world, with some of the best written songs we’ve heard yet this year..
