Premiere: Brooke Aulani – Shame

Shame

Welcome L.A.-based R&B singer Brooke Aulani to B3SCI. The excellent “Shame”, previewed here, is the first stream from the SoCal artist’s forthcoming debut EP, “Bedroom Music”. “Shame” is centered around a potent alto vocal that sounds as if it’s been performed on the track by an already in her prime singer (the melodic phrasing is particularly strong here) and is coupled with a minimal/modern-feeling instrumental that will sit very nicely in your next Spotify mix next to artists like TALA and BANKS. We love the track. Stream B3 Premiere of “Shame” from Brooke Aulani below.

Premiere: The Brinks – Temporary Love

The Brinks - Oladapo Fagbenle

The Brinks are new duo composed of New York City producer Matt Friedman and Australian singer Scott Mellis. The twosome are readying their debut EP for a December 4th release on Louder Than Life Records. “Temporary Love”, the six song EP’s title track, is a cool and potent (and very well-constructed) mix of strong soulful melodic writing and spare forward-thinking production. The EP is executive produced by Pusha T(!) and one of our all-time favorite producers Salaam Remi(!) and the band has some very influential advocates including reigning King of Pop Pharrell Williams. We love the track and are very pleased to B3 Premiere it below.

Premiere: R e l – Gooey (Glass Animals)

LX mailbox

r e l, the L.A.-based artist who in May released a very good self-titled EP, posses an extra affecting voice. Particularly special here on this new cover of Glass Animals’ “Gooey” (one of this indie decade’s best songs) is r e l’s skill at threading/weaving her vocal phrasing in an almost symbiotic way with the instrumental’s flow and pacing; listening to the track is akin to feeling the sensation (at least what I imagine this sensation to be like!) of being gently wound through a melodic whirlwind (think Pythagoras’ “Musica universalis”). We’re very impressed. r e l’s debut LP is in the works for early 2016.

Premiere: HAIZE – Solar

HAIZE - Solar Press Shot

“Solar” is the debut track online from Reading UK newcomers HAIZE. Best pals with Sundara Karma in the Reading scene, the quartet (all aged 18 years!) operate (much like SK) within a space of instrumentally artful indie ruddered by a strong command pop hook writing and song structure. In talking about the anthemic track’s origins HAIZE described “Solar” as “the first song to come together properly as a band. It’s all our favourite live song to play and is always sure to make us let loose at the end of a set.” and lyrically about “being stuck in the middle ground when ending with someone and second guessing every feeling, but in the end realising whats best and having to deal with it. In a way it’s a heartbreak song but goes through all the stages you go through when it’s over with someone.” We’re pleased to B3 Premiere the debut track from the very promising HAIZE. Enjoy below.

Premiere: Mansions On The Moon – Radio (Exale Remix)

mansionsonthemoon

Russian in Boston Exale makes a strong B3 debut with a funkified nu-disco remix for Pharrell Williams collaborators Mansions On The Moon’s single for “Radio”. A component part of a new free download (w/ the original “Radio” track) for fans to mark a year on since the release of MOTM’s debut album, Exale’s mix marries French-inspired warm house tones with a decidedly more rhythmically angular bent. Spin the B3SCI Premiere of Exale’s excellent new remix for Mansions On The Moon’s “Radio” below.

Premiere: Ofelia K – Gone (Duncan Murray Remix)

ofeliakduncanmurray

House dynamo / music manager (Tom Misch & Blonde) Duncan Murray teams up with buzzing pop singer Ofelia K for an after hours mix of her “Gone” single. Here Ofelia K’s “Gone” vocal has been positioned by Duncan Murray ethereally atop the mix and meshed with driving arpeggiations and washes of late night house atmosphere. It’s a sleek and sultry take on the track that we totally adore. Spin the B3SCI Premiere of Duncan Murray’s remix of “Gone” by Ofelia K below.

Premiere: Mainland – Outcast (Fake Guns Remix)

unnamed (12)

New York trio Mainland catch a bit of pop-infused remix muscle from pals Fake Guns on new mix for “Outcast”. Equipping the track with a touch more spare rhythm-centric core, FG’s mix brings out from the original’s tune some neat and unexpected melodic turns. Mainland’s Jordan Topf had a similar vibe on the remix saying, “We love this remix from our good friends, Fake Guns. They really brought a whole pop electro element to the song that we’d never imagined. So many remixes totally change the original song, but this one took the original body and changed it’s outfit, or at the least have it a new hairstyle.” Spin the B3 Premiere of Fake Guns’ remix of Mainland’s “Outcast” below. Enjoy!

Premiere: RAC – Dangerous / Big Data – Let Go

fairtrade

Powerhouses RAC and Big Data kicked off their joint “Going Our Own Way Tour” in Detroit on Sunday and to mark the tour’s start are releasing a 2-track cover exchange EP called “Fair Trade”. On the RAC side, the Portland producer connects with vocalist Pink Feathers for a new take on Big Data’s Alternative #1 “Dangerous” adding Garbage-inspired tinges of 90’s and trip-hop; bands and a sound he “grew up….so I have a lot of affinity for that era.”

For Big Data’s part, RAC’s “Let Go” is spun in a minor key around a cool brusque bass-line. Big Data said in developing the “Let Go” cover, “I really tried to approach it from the melody, first. I sang the melody in my head over and over, and just tried to go with my first instincts as far as how to arrange it. I was trying to imagine the song in a minor key, and then the bassline jumped out at me. As I started to develop the arrangement, I wanted to give the song a bit more of a dusty-sounding feel with my mix. Andre’s original version of the song is mixed so phenomenally and the sounds are so punchy and clear, so I thought it would be a cool contrast to hear it that way. I brought in Lizy Ryan from my live band to sing it with me as a duet.”

The “Fair Trade” EP is out tomorrow on iTunes. We’re very pleased to B3 Premiere both tracks below. Enjoy!

Premiere: ROCH – Kintsugi

ROCH1

ROCH streams today second track online “Kintsugi” (following-up very good “Closer”). About the track, ROCH says she was “listening to a lot of early Grace Slick when I wrote ‘Kintsugi’ which was a major influence”; which we can hear in the coolly chant-styled hymnal-quality melody and vocal. And that the narrative of the track follows “feeling estranged from where you are or who you are, and that sense you have when finding yourself in unfamiliar situations and having to make conscious decisions to arrive at that certain point without knowing how you got there, (“are we altogether lovingly out of place”). We dig the juxtaposition of instrumental/aesthetic style (the warmth of the vocal lines) with the lyrical account of dislocation. It’s a potent conceptual blend.

Premiere: Manor – Grand Mal

manor

Back in August we loved the psych-tinged modern pop of Australian duo Manor’s debut track “Can You Hear Me”. The Aussie twosome return today with the follow-up, the equally excellent mid-tempo song “Grand Mal”. On the track, a big and visceral distorted main drum beat anchors an otherwise more surreal instrumental of reverb-drenched guitars, deep-in-the-PA vocals, and a magnetic bass-driven groove. Stream the B3 Premiere of Manor’s new track “Grand Mal” below.
