Jessie Baylin – I Feel That Too

baylin

Golden-voiced songstress Jessie Baylin released her third LP Little Spark last week. The thoughtful slowdance “I Feel That Too” is our pick from the record, though the whole LP is really good. A mix somewhere between Mazzy Star, Uncle Neil (country Uncle Neil), and 2011 indie pop, Baylin’s sound has matured/fully realized on Little Spark, which is easily her best record to date. Sample “I Feel That Too” below.

B3SCI PREMIERE: Company of Thieves – Won’t Back Down (Tom Petty Cover)

genevieve-company-of-thieves

Chicago collective Company of Thieves recently cut this stripped-down cover of Tom Petty’s “Won’t Back Down”. The band adds a sweet authentic touch to the classic which features a starlit vocal from lead singer Genevieve Schatz, helping give anyone a reason to stand their ground.

You can also take a look at a live performance of the song below with some additional tunes and interview coverage courtesy of the good peeps at Lightbox Sessions.

Viking Moses – Follow Foreign Love

vikingmoses

Lo-fi warrior Viking Moses a/k/a Brendon Massei returns with new LP The Conquest Night. A simple, sincere song about loving the one you’re not necessarily with, “Follow Foreign Love” examples a uniqueness and vitality that sets Massei’s songs apart from others in its well-worn genre.

Jhameel – Blackbird (Beatles Cover)

jhameel

Jhameel clearly isn’t afraid to tread in any ‘sacred’ territory of Pop music. His cover of Sir Paul’s “Blackbird” is a breathy and soulful adaptation that seems to share the same type of appreciation for The Beatles catalog as say, perhaps, a young MJ may have. Preview the song and watch his performance of it below.

Houndmouth – Houston Train + Penitentiary

houndmouth

Bands like Houndmouth are why rock and roll can never die. When there’s great songs involved, there will always be people that can pick up their guitars and channel the sounds that we’ve heard for decades in exciting ways. Keeping cuts like “Houston Train” and “Penitentiary” on repeat makes me want to dig back in my record collection to listen to some of the classic rock records that got me into music in the first place. With only three tunes to their name and a debut EP expected in early spring, Houndmouth are well worth the 10 minutes of press play that you see below.

Shelf Nunny – New Life

The oft Tree collaborator, Shelf Nunny recently dropped this abstract and oberst/schwartzman toned track. Much more “New Life” showcases an interesting form of writing and production talent from a budding SoCal based artist.

Pale Seas – Something or Nothing

pale-seas

“Something Or Nothing” comes courtesy of new London based band Pale Seas (formerly Netherlands). The group’s pleasant well-crafted Dream Folk is already in rotation at b3sci HQ and will no doubt make it’s way in our next road trip mix. The band recently recorded their debut EP with respected production team Jimmy Robertson and Demien Castellanos whose credits include Florence & The Machine, Anna Calvi, and Exlovers to name a few. You can pick up “Something or Nothing” as a limited Edition 7″ through Fear & Records on March 5th.

Tree & Shelf Nunny – This is Separation

By Chris Gedos

tree-this-separation

“This is Separation” succeeds on the same formula as Tree’s previous offering, “People” lo-fi ethos, big yet intimate refrains, and very deliberate arrangements with unexpected shifts not unlike symphonic movement transitions. Whether Tree & Shelf Nunny record alone or in collaboration, I’ll be very excited to see if the youthful San Fran artists plop any LPs in 2k12.

EMiL – Deadwood

By Trevor Meyer

emil

Here’s a stellar piece from new London-based artist, EMiL. This song has a killer chorus hook and a beautiful string arrangement throughout. It’s the kind of song that gives you that feeling like you’re on fire and every spot is your “sweet spot” on the basketball court. This track brings the heat all day. EMiL is set to officially release “Deadwood” on March 25. I am counting down the days.

REVIEW: Old Soul – Old Soul [LP]

Contributed by Trevor Meyer

old-soul

Still swimming in nostalgia from the return trip to California, I took a few listens to Old Soul’s self-titled 2011 release. The album features a nice collection of folk tunes and blends elements of soul and pastoral ambience. My favorite tracks are the waltzy, “People Are Talking” and the dynamic “Red & Gold,” a track that draws parallels to older Coldplay and A.A. Bondy. Also, “Caught A Train” is a well-knit piece woven together by a fusion of soul, acoustic, and alternative rock. This album has a lot to offer its listeners. I highly recommend checking these guys out.

B3SCI TOP 50 ALBUMS OF 2011

pullmantop50albums

Although we’ve come to the end of the road, still Adele we can’t let you go. We’ve reached 2011’s closing hour and now it is time: b3sci presents it’s Top 50 Albums of 2011. No one’s even come close to having the year Adele’s had. The most albums sold in a single year since 2004, two of the biggest singles of the year, etc, a truly international breakthrough both commercially and critically on a level we haven’t seen in a long time. Adele, our girl, the crown is yours. 21 is b3sci’s Album of the year.

So where the fuck is Adele on many of these respected-indie-press-dude best of lists? That period between Nov 2010 when “Rolling in the Deep” first broke and the lead up to the album’s release in late January, Adele ruled the blogosphere, the fold was united. Then “RITD” got overplayed to the point of absurdity, your mom bought the record, probably your grandma bought it too; those bros that listen to Foo Fighters and Deadmau5 started bumping “Someone Like You” out their trunk. Soon, the “wrong people” liked 21 and Adele’s brief moment atop the indiesphere was over. Right.

Thanks for reading this year, y’all. We’ve got some big plans for 2012. Stay tuned. Much love.

B3SCI TOP 50 SONGS OF 2011

blankfeintop50tracks

2011. What wasn’t to love? The rise of weirdo R&B, the fall of chillwave, the end of R.E.M. We started the construction of this list over a month ago. One truly epic and extensive Google spreadsheet later, we arrived at this Top 50. We sorted and sorted and sorted, listened through a TON OF STUFF, “traded jabs” on whether James Blake or Jamie Woon put on the tougher persona, etc. Thanks for reading and we hope y’all enjoy the list!
